Directed by Olivia Wilde, ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ follows Alice and Jack, a 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets. Further details of the storyline are still concealed, but from behind-the-scenes images, it is safe to assume that things get pretty bloody, and Alice is involved in a car chase.
A Cast and Crew Spreading Kindness
Announced mid-last year, ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ has everyone across the world on the edge of their seats in the excitement of what is to come, with an incredible cast including Florence Pugh, who will be portraying the lead female Alice and Harry Styles, who will be portraying the lead male, Jack.

Directed by Olivia Wilde, she spoke about her resilience of keeping a safe and fun environment for her cast and crew by saying, “no a**holes on set.” From past experiences working with such people, Wilde wanted to ensure that the process of creating ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ would contain no negativity. As said by Wilde in an interview with Variety concerning why she had the “no a**holes” policy, “Someone, who’s a very established actor and director in this industry, gave me really terrible advice that was helpful, because I just knew I had to do the opposite, —
They said, ‘Listen, the way to get respect on a set, you have to have three arguments a day. Three big arguments that reinstate your power, remind everyone who’s in charge, be the predator.’ That is the opposite of my process. And I want none of that…the no assholes policy it puts everybody on the same level.”

Which, with personalities like Pugh and Styles, negativity where? Because all my eyes can see is kindness and positivity. Wilde’s first directorial debut was for ‘Booksmart’ starring Kaitlyn Dever (‘Unbelievable’), Beanie Feldstein (‘Lady Bird’), and more. Which, I adore ‘Booksmart’ so there is no doubt in my mind that Wilde will pull something incredibly witty, creative, and impactful for ‘Don’t Worry Darling.’ Katie Silberman, who worked on the screenplay for ‘Booksmart,’ also wrote the script for ‘Don’t Worry Darling,’ which gives me a good outlook at the upcoming modern genius take that will erupt from Pugh and Styles’ mouths. It is also inspiring to see that one of my favorite female filmmakers, Catherine Hardwicke (‘Twilight’), also had her part in the film as executive producer. Truly, this is a film surrounded by female filmmakers and kindhearted people.
At this point, there is no trailer, but there is a monotonous amount of behind-the-scenes photos as the gracious and breathtaking Pugh drives in a vintage 1950s car or Styles who drives one backwards. The closest we have to on-screen footage of Florence Pugh as Alice can be found through Olivia Wilde’s recent Instagram post as she says, “Don’t worry.”

At first, Shia LeBeouf (‘Honey Boy’) was rumored to have been cast for the role of Jack, that is until he pulled out due to scheduling conflicts, which resulted in Harry Styles getting the part in his second feature film. Styles had his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 World War II film ‘Dunkirk‘ in a supporting role. While filming for Nolan, his acting skills were progressively impressive as he would wait around the set hoping to land more scenes. Simultaneously, Nolan schemed together scenes for Styles to be in simply because Nolan was impressed by Styles and would promptly decide to include him more throughout the film. Well done, Harry. With ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ now under his belt, the fan-favorite is also in talks to star in ‘My Policeman,’ a gay-themed novel adaptation of a bisexual couple. I am so excited I could use all caps for this entire sentence with a thousand exclamation points.

With Florence’s upcoming work besides ‘Don’t Worry Darling,’ she is going to appear in Cate Shortland’s ‘Black Widow,’ alongside Scarlett Johansson (‘Lost in Translation’), David Harbour (‘Stranger Things’), and more. She will be portraying Yelena Belova, an assassin and spy who becomes allies with Natasha Romanoff A.K.A Black Widow. There are also rumors and suspected audio clips that the former One Direction member and current inspirational artist has or is creating songs for ‘Don’t Worry Darling.’ I would not rule this out as he is an incredible musician, so not taking the chance to include his expertise and creativity would be a loss. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Chris Pine reveals a few thoughts on the thriller meets drama, “The aesthetic of the movie is beautiful. The story is so compelling and so fun and so dark and twisted…shooting was wonderful. Olivia is very clear about what she wants.”
Pine also had some thoughts about the heartthrob and kind soul, Styles; as he says, “Harry Styles is an absolute delight. He’s one of the most professional people I’ve ever met. Couldn’t be kinder, more gracious, I mean, really, I was stunned by this kid. He’s off-the-charts cool. — It’s a great cast. You know, life is short, so hopefully, you get a chance to make good art with people you really enjoy, and I’ve been really, really lucky in that regard.”
Other actors and actresses that will be in the film include comedian Nick Kroll (‘Sausage Party’), burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese, former fashion model Gemma Chan (‘Crazy Rich Asians’), upcoming actress KiKi Layne (‘If Beale Street Could Talk’), and more.
Cast’s Relationships and Pandemic Issues
With the pandemic, filming has been difficult for the film industry, and productions have slowed down quite a bit. When someone tested positive for COVID-19 on the set of ‘Don’t Worry Darling,’ the production was shut down immediately for 14 weeks, and all crew and cast had to isolate themselves. While the individual who tested positive was not in the cast’s inner circle, they were still relatively close enough to have to shut down the production until everyone was clear. After this occurrence, no one else tested positive while filming.

Behind-the-scenes, photos have been surfacing across all social media platforms for the last few months, with Pugh and Styles’ fans raving about their excitement of the two. Harry Styles fans have continuously been known to become quite distasteful to whom the former boy band and current inspirational star chooses to date romantically. So, when it comes to filming a movie that requires a romantic relationship with a lovely co-star, you would expect the fans to be losing their minds about what is ultimately going to happen in the film; however, it has been the exact opposite. Why? Well, simply because the same fans who adore Harry are the same who adore Florence. With her cutesy cooking and relatability, the fans, including myself, are pretty okay with what is to come because we love the two individually. Anything that happens romantically on-screen is wholly read as simply that, on-screen romance, so it’s digestible to understand what is real and fake.
Although, there have been scandals all over the news showing how close Wilde and Styles have gotten over the course of filming. While there are rumors about their friendship or relationship or whatever, I urge you all to leave them be. Find the kindness Harry so desperately wants for all of us to have and let them be happy as friends or whatever they choose to be.

In an interview with People, Wilde talks about the excitement she felt when she found out that Harry Styles would be joining her film. “I did a little victory dance when we heard that we officially had Harry in the film because we knew that he has a real appreciation for fashion and style. — And this movie is incredibly stylistic. It’s very heightened and opulent, and I’m really grateful that he is so enthusiastic about that element of the process — some actors just don’t care.” The title alone is enticing and to hear Florence or Harry say “darling” well, my heart’s pace has already multiplied.

‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Has Finished Filming, Onto Post-Production!
Cast members have been sharing photos from the set, showing their appreciation for co-workers and co-stars. Florence Pugh shared an Instagram post from the set saying, “It’s official, it’s a wrap! Yesterday was our final day on the set of ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ and I wanted to give you all some insight on who this movie is — these are some of the people who made this movie happen. This is our talented crew.” Of course, after filming had finished, the incredibly kindhearted Pugh and Styles decided to send thank you gifts to the cast and crew. Which broke the internet as the two were spotted in frog bucket hats alongside cast members.
Olivia Wilde has shared numerous images on Instagram, more so than the rest of the cast, as she dedicates her appreciation for their contribution in ‘Don’t Worry Darling.’ Wilde had this to share about Styles on an Instagram post, “Little known fact: most male actors don’t want to play supporting roles in female-led films. The industry has raised them to believe it lessens their power (i.e. financial value) to accept these roles, which is one of the reasons it’s so hard to get financing for movies focusing on female stories. No joke, it is harrrrrd to find actors who recognize why it might be worth it to allow for a woman to hold the spotlight. Enter: @harrystyles, our ‘Jack’ . Not only did he relish the opportunity to allow for the brilliant @florencepugh to hold center stage as our ‘Alice’, but he infused every scene with a nuanced sense of humanity. He didn’t have to join our circus, but he jumped on board with humility and grace, and blew us away every day with his talent, warmth, and ability to drive backwards. 👊 #dontworrydarling.”
