Unless you have been living underground, there is a good chance you have seen Lady Gaga’s Instagram post saying “Signore e Signora Gucci,” which translates to “Mr. and Mrs. Gucci.” The iconic image shows Lady Gaga, and co-star Adam Driver linked together arm-in-arm on a ski-trip while filming for ‘House of Gucci.’ The pair are almost unrecognizable as Adam’s sultry and intimidating complexion is hidden by a large pair of glasses while Lady Gaga is drowning in gold and fur.

Directed by Ridley Scott, written by Robert Bentivegna and based upon Sara Gay Forden’s nonfiction novel ‘The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed,’ ‘House of Gucci’ will follow the ’90s true-crime life story of Patrizia Reggiani’s (Lady Gaga) divorce to ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver). Maurizio was murdered in the lobby of Gucci’s Milan office on March 27, 1995 — occurring twelve years after the death of his father, Rodolfo Gucci (Jeremy Irons), causing Maurizio to inherit the majority of his father’s stake in the luxury fashion brand.
The murder of Maurizio comes four years after he divorced Patrizia, who then was convicted of hiring a hitman to assassinate her former husband. Two years after the murder, Patrizia was arrested, followed by a conviction in 1998 for her role in planning her ex-husband’s assassination. After eighteen years behind bars, she was freed from prison in 2016.
With acting aside, behind-the-scenes images are surfacing worldwide with the incredible costume design as expected when telling a story that involves the luxury fashion brand Gucci. It is almost impossible to wrap my head around the fact that this story is, in fact, based upon real-life because simply it seems like it is out of a drama fiction novel.

Murder And Greed But Make It Fashion
Filming for the planted murder began in early 2021 after news came out of Lady Gaga arriving in Rome to begin filming. After that, paparazzi photos of the singer, songwriter, and actress alongside Adam Driver poured through all news and social media outlets. It is still unsure how much longer the filming process will take, but I would expect filming to wrap up soon with the expected release coming closer.
The film comes just in time for the 100th anniversary of the creation of the house of Gucci. For the last fifteen years, way before any production company or actor/actress got involved, Ridley Scott was planning a film about the Gucci family. From Angelina Jolie to Leonardo DiCaprio, many celebrities have been considered for the roles of Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci. But, in 2019 it was revealed that Lady Gaga would portray the cunning, greedy, and murderous Patrizia followed by Adam Driver who will be portraying Maurizio.
In 2016 when Patrizia Reggiani was released from prison, she was interviewed by The Observer and told her thoughts on the murder but found to focus on sympathy towards herself. “I think I am a very strong person because I survived all these years in captivity. I slept a lot. I took care of my plants. I looked after Bambi, my pet ferret,” she says. “I don’t like to talk about this time at all. It is all a bad dream to me.”

The now 72-year-old is displeased by the casting of Lady Gaga because the singer, songwriter, and actress never took the opportunity to meet the ex-convict before being cast and filming. In an interview with Ansa, Patrizia says, “I’m annoyed by the fact that Lady Gaga is portraying me in the new Ridley Scott film without even having the courtesy or the good sense to come and meet me.” She continues, “It’s nothing to do with money because I won’t be taking a single cent from the film. It’s about common sense and respect. I believe that any good actor should first get to know the person that they are meant to be playing.”
While I in no way agree with Patrizia‘s life decisions, I do agree with the point she is making. Think of Johnny Depp for ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,’ he got to know Hunter S. Thompson so much that they became good friends, and Johnny was devastated when he passed away. Even so much so that you can find the hint of Thompson’s voice within Johnny at some points in interviews to this day. When interviewing and press begins for ‘House of Gucci,’ I can expect that this might be brought up, or Lady Gaga will be questioned on her opinions of the ex-convict, and this might explain her decision not to meet her.
Even though Patrizia does remain quite pose even with her distaste, I understand why she would feel that way towards Lady Gaga. “I think it is not right that I wasn’t contacted. And I say this with all the sympathy and appreciation that I have for her.” We cannot critique Lady Gaga’s performance at this time but it could definitely be a critique to say that she might have done a better job had she met the person she is portraying. If the person is alive and willing to meet, why would you not when the role is that incredibly important?

There are also rumors that the actors do not speak Italian in the film (with the exception of a few words), and Driver and Lady Gaga speak with an American accent. While this is only currently a rumor, I would hope that Ridley Scott would not be Americanizing an Italian tragedy.
Were They The Right Choice? Only Time Will Tell.
Ridley Scott’s past directorial works include ‘Alien,’ ‘Gladiator,’ and ‘Blade Runner,’ but it seems that his taste targets a male audience, so why would he choose a fashion crime drama? Well, unknowingly enough, Scott has directed numerous video shorts for Chanel such as ‘Chanel No. 5: The Swimming Pool‘ or ‘Chanel No. 5: La Star.’ This tasted right in line with what is most likely to come for ‘House of Gucci’ with the inclusion of crime that can be found in Scott’s ‘Thelma & Louise.’
Lady Gaga has come a long way from her former days in meat dresses and uniquely unordinary high heels. The primary cause for her casting as the hitman hiring woman is from her Oscar-nominated performance in Bradley Cooper’s ‘A Star is Born,‘ which earned her recognition amongst those in the film industry. Lady Gaga will be taking the lead as the ex-convict and murder-plot woman alongside Adam Driver, who will be taking the other lead as the one who will die. Match made in heaven.

With two big stars cast as the opposing forces, ‘House of Gucci’ will also feature Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci (Maurizio’s uncle), Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci (Aldo’s son and Maurizio’s cousin), Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci (Maurizio’s father), and Camille Cottin as Paola Franchi, the woman Maurizio Gucci has an affair with and whom he stays with after Patrizia. Robert De Niro was once believed to take on Rodolfo Gucci’s role, but as with the other speculations for other roles things sometimes do not work out.
The Fashion Is To Die For – Literally.
With only paparazzi photos depicting the true nature of the film and cast, I am beyond thrilled to see that the costume design alone is a force to be reckoned with. The costume designer, Janty Yates, who has worked alongside Ridley Scott numerous times and whose experience is most designed for male-dominated films, seems to be outdoing herself. Such as Lady Gaga in a one-piece red ski suit, cherry red dress with an elegant fur coat, brown polka-dot moment, or the floral boat number; Yates is killing the fashion game. Adam Driver’s styling has also been done well as he struts down a mountain in a full white ski suit. The makeup department is done by Frederic Aspiras, and Sarah Tanno, who are also doing an incredible job with Lady Gaga’s ’80s glam with the huge hair, a smokey eye, and cheekbones that could cut.
Only a few more months left until we get to see Lady Gaga and Adam Driver kiss or ski down a mountain before the inevitable end of Driver’s character.

‘House of Gucci’ Expected Release
While still in the filming process, audiences can expect to see ‘House of Gucci’ on November 24, 2021, a week before Thanksgiving and one of the year’s most popular times to release films. The film will most likely be released to select theaters, with the COVID restrictions such as masks and social distancing. Though, as with most things, this is all up in the air as things can change in the blink of an eye.
Where To Find The Stars
