The Hollywood Insider The Emmys 2021, Winners, Snubs

An Overview of the 73rd Annual Emmys

Last year, due to the COVID pandemic, the 2020 Emmys were forced to do something completely out of the ordinary. How do you host an awards show filled with hundreds of celebrities and filmmakers all in one place and still keep everyone safe? The answer lies in video chat. Award winners were forced to stay home and make their acceptance speeches over video call, rather than in-person, for everyone’s safety. It was a weird year for award shows, and now in the back half of 2021, things in Hollywood seem to be starting to get back to some semblance of normalcy. This year, the show was hosted by Cedric the Entertainer and was held in-person, with reduced attendance, at the Event Deck at L.A. Live in Los Angeles.

The show was filled with fun gags and celebrity antics that made the show feel a lot more lively than the previous years’. There was a joke about the whole “Mike Pence with a fly on his head” moment that happened last year. Conan O’Brien made audiences laugh by shouting enthusiastically and giving a salute to Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma as the latter went on stage to talk about the television industry. Conan later appeared on-stage during Stephen Colbert’s win for last year’s live election night special, cheering and applauding. Seth Rogen also made headlines during his presentation for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series”, where he jokingly complained about the Emmys’ safety measures. “We’re in a hermetically sealed tent right now. I would not have come to this!” he says. “It’s more important that we have three chandeliers than that we make sure we don’t kill Eugene Levy tonight. That is what has been decided,”.

Most important of all, however, is the awards from Sunday night. ‘Ted Lasso’ made a big splash with its first season, earning 20 nominations (breaking the previous record from ‘Glee’). On awards night, it left its mark, winning Outstanding Comedy Series while Jason Sudeikis won for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, winning his first-ever Emmy. Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham also secured the Supporting Actor and Actress Awards as well.

Meanwhile, in the drama department, ‘The Crown’ took home all the big awards, winning for Outstanding Drama Series along with the four big drama awards: Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress. This period drama took home the most awards Sunday night, winning 7 and sweeping the main drama categories. For Limited Series, ‘Mare of Easttown’ was very warmly received at the Emmys, with Kate Winslet, Evan Peters, and Julianne Nicholson winning Outstanding Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress in a Limited Series. While many people were expecting Anya Taylor-Joy to win over Kate Winslet, ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ was able to take the award for Outstanding Limited Series.

But even with numerous surprise wins, there were equally as many upsets. The critically acclaimed dystopian drama ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ was nominated for a whopping 21 awards, but didn’t win a single one. That’s jaw-dropping. How does a series garner this many nominations but not win any of them? Many were expecting ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ to win at least one award, but the show was completely shut out on Sunday night. Another shocker came with the fact that Conan O’Brien failed to win the award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series with his late-night talk series ‘Conan’, which ended earlier this year. John Oliver took the award home, acknowledging O’Brien and his impact on entertainment during his acceptance speech.

‘WandaVision’ was a fan-favorite going into the Emmys this year. Marvel’s first original series of the year was praised for the performances of its leads, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, and its unique concept. Even with 8 nominations, the show sadly did not garner a single win.

Overall, the 2021 Emmys ran pretty successfully. With a decent crowd and awards finally in person, the show was a fun bounceback from an awkward year of virtual COVID-centered award shows. While shows like ‘Ted Lasso’, ‘The Crown’ and ‘Mare of Easttown’ swept many of the awards this year, it was nice to see other shows still win big, like Ewan McGregor winning for the limited series ‘Halston’ and Jean Smart winning for the new comedy series ‘Hacks’. The show was a breath of fresh air compared to last year’s ceremony, and it’s a welcome step back into normalcy.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “The Hollywood Insider fully supports the much-needed Black Lives Matter movement. We are actively, physically and digitally a part of this global movement. We will continue reporting on this major issue of police brutality and legal murders of Black people to hold the system accountable. We will continue reporting on this major issue with kindness and respect to all Black people, as each and every one of them are seen and heard.

Just a reminder, that the Black Lives Matter movement is about more than just police brutality and extends into banking, housing, education, medical, infrastructure, etc. We have the space and time for all your stories. We believe in peaceful/non-violent protests and I would like to request the rest of media to focus on 95% of the protests that are peaceful and working effectively with positive changes happening daily.
