The Awards Picture
The Tony Nominees were announced the morning of May 9th by Adrienne Warren and Joshua Henry. A Strange Loop garnered the most nominations, eleven, and was closely followed by Paradise Square and MJ, each of which earned ten. Though A Strange Loop seems set up to take home the most awards, the nominations are pretty spread out this year, and the competition is far from one-sided. The Company revival and SIX: The Musical have both been sensations, and the Bob Dylan jukebox musical Girl From the North Country is gorgeous, if humbler than some of the other nominated musicals. As for plays, The Lehman Trilogy earned the most nominations with eight, but was followed closely by both revivals (for colored girls…, The Skin of Our Teeth) and other new plays (Clyde’s, Hangmen).

The Scoop for Movie Lovers
If you’re reading the Tony nominees on Hollywood Insider, you probably love movies and television as much as we do. Many Hollywood creatives work on Broadway as well, and this year has been no exception.
Billy Crystal starred in an adaptation of the first movie he directed, ‘Mr. Saturday Night,’ and earned a nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Hugh Jackman earned a nomination in that same category for The Music Man, continuing his musical theater career.
Meanwhile, Sam Rockwell and Ruth Negga earned nominations for leading roles in plays, Rockwell for the revival of American Buffalo, and Negga for Macbeth. Almost half of the nominees for Best Featured Actor in a Play are recognizable faces from TV: Alfie Allen (‘Game of Thrones’) for his role in Hangmen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (‘Modern Family’) for his role in Take Me Out, and Jesse Williams (‘Grey’s Anatomy’) for his role in Take Me Out.
Other well-known stars didn’t fare as well. Daniel Craig, who starred opposite Ruth Negga in Macbeth, did not earn a nomination, nor did Matthew Broderick or Sarah Jessica Parker for their starring roles in Plaza Suite. Debra Messing starred in Birthday Candles, a new play that had a decent run, but didn’t garner any Tony nominations.
Here’s one you might not catch at first glance: Sam Mendes directed The Lehman Trilogy. The director of ‘1917’ and ‘American Beauty’ has a long history of directing in theater. He got his start as a film director when Steven Spielberg saw a few of his musical productions on Broadway.

When Will the Tony Awards Be?
The ceremony will be held live at Radio City Music Hall for the first time since the COVID shutdowns, and for the first time ever will be broadcasted nationally. It will air on CBS and Paramount+, on June 12, 2022, at 8:00 pm EDT.
Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose (Anita in Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’) will host, and, as always, nominees will have performance spots to show off snippets of their shows, so get ready for a theatrical night.

Click here to read The Hollywood Insider’s CEO Pritan Ambroase’s love letter to Cinema, TV and Media. An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.
I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV. media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
