The Hollywood Insider Review Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

Introduction

In 2014, halfway through their 2nd phase of films, Marvel Cinema Studios introduced the world to a group of misfit criminals turned protectors from space: the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. The success of the film was totally unpredicted, especially considering that the characters were considerably lesser known comic faces than the likes of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. Part of the magic of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is the dynamic between each of the characters, creating excellent banter and making for thrilling action and hilarious comedy. One 2017 sequel later, and the Guardians is set to release its third film in 2023: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’.

Synopsis and Catching Up

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will see the return of James Gunn, director of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, as director of the third installment. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff will be reprising their roles as Starlord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Nebula, and Mantis respectively. Also reprising their roles are Sean Gunn, son of James Gunn, as Kraglin, the bounty hunter who was a part of Yondu Udonta’s crew; Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord, the space captain leader of the Ravager clan; and Elizabeth Debicki as Kismet, the Sovereign alien who hired the Guardians to help her at the end of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’.

Not much has been released on what ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will be about, but from certain clues we can infer details about the upcoming film. For starters, it’s important to discuss what occurred in the previous two ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films along with events that occurred in 2018s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and 2019s ‘Avengers: End Game’. As shown in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, Yondu heroically sacrificed himself to save Starlord’s life, meaning Michael Rooker’s character will likely not be returning to the upcoming installment unless as a flashback. In this same film, it was also revealed that Starlord is a half-Celestial being, explaining how he was able to survive touching an Infinity Stone in the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film. In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, Gamora, daughter of Thanos, was killed by her father as a way for him to obtain one of the Infinity Stones. ‘Avengers: Endgame’, despite reviving a multitude of previously dead Marvel heroes, does not see the return of Gamora. However, a 2014 version of Gamora, one who had not met the Guardians of the Galaxy, was time traveled to the present and went missing. From this, we can infer that the Guardians will be looking for Gamora in this upcoming film.

Along with previous actors returning to roles, it has been rumored and implied that Will Poulter will be joining the cast as Adam Warlock, a genetically perfect human who fled to space. Along with Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji has discussed in an interview that he will be playing the High Evolutionary, a mad scientist who turns himself into a genetically modified human. We can assume considering the importance of both of these characters in Marvel Comics that they will be playing major roles in the upcoming film.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 – News from James Gunn and the Holiday Special

James Gunn has spoken about the movie only a few times, giving little details about the upcoming project. Gunn has released a number of tweets around the project, such as saying “Vol 3 was very difficult for a billion reasons, beginning with its size and complexity. It might be my favorite movie…” (James Gunn). While at Comic-con, Gunn also gave the big news that this Guardians film is the end of original Guardian’s story, meaning that this film will provide a pretty definitive ending to the story that began in 2014. It was also stated that Gunn’s script is extremely emotional, meaning that a number of loose ends will be tied up and there may be a number of saddening moments.

Although we will not be seeing the Guardians of the Galaxy in a feature project until 2023, the Guardians recently made an appearance in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and will be appearing in the ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ this December on Disney+. Although appearing to be a simple appearance before their third film, Gunn has exasperated the importance of the holiday special, stating it to be the “epilogue” of Marvel’s phase 4 and crucial to watch before going to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ in theaters next year. If you’re not on Disney+ now, it would be smart to begin a free trial soon to watch the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ if you plan on watching ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ in theaters when it releases.

The End of our Guardians?

With the news that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will be essentially wrapping up the Guardians’ story, will we see the Guardians of the Galaxy ever again? It appears that whatever Guardians see the light of day after the third film, it will be possible to see some of the old guardians in future Marvel projects. It is also possible that there will be future iterations of the Guardians of the Galaxy with new and old members. Since Gunn has said this will be the last time we see these Guardians together, it’s heavily implied that a Guardian, or multiple Guardians, will bite the dust in this film. It is also possible that Chris Pratt’s Starlord dies in this film, considering the Guardians’ movies are really his story. Killing his character in a satisfying fashion would be a perfect way to wrap up these films, similar to how ‘Avengers: Endgame’ saw Iron Man, the MCU’s original hero, save the universe from Thanos at the cost of his life. It will be saddening to see our Guardians go, as all types of Marvel audiences have grown attached to the characters over the near decade they have been in the MCU. Despite this, if Gunn does these characters the justice they deserve, audiences will be happy to see the Guardians of the Galaxy sent off in a glorious fashion.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.
