Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’
‘The Fabelmans’ is a new film from director Steven Spielberg. This film explores a lot of different things, but mainly the love that a young man developed for film at an early age. This seems to be Steven’s love story to Hollywood, and how any young persistent individual can succeed with love and a little luck. Although there are plenty of things that have been dramatized for entertainment purposes, it gives us a small look into why Steven is one of the most dedicated filmmakers of our era.

Steven wrote the piece alongside Tony Kushner. Steven’s life was a wise thing to adapt as his path through the industry was through this profound love for the craft. In the documentary ‘Spielberg’ streaming on HBO, you can dive into the man behind the camera. This short documentary takes you through his journey to becoming the world’s premiere American blockbuster director.
Differences Done Well
If you watch that film, and then see ‘The Fabelmans,’ you might see the differences in the script that was written and the real-life man himself. The story has a lot of similarities, but the writers help to gap the bridges where there needed to be higher stakes for entertainment purposes. Even though they did this, you still can imagine the joy Steven had putting some childhood moments together for a vast audience.
Steven’s story has been nothing but spectacular, to say the least. When anyone consistently does what they love with integrity and passion, there are bound to be incredible things that take place. ‘The Fabelmans’ is a film that takes you through several themes like family, passion, dreams, love, and loss.
Sammy’s Start
At the beginning of the film, we are introduced to the Fabelmans that are about to see ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ by director Cecile B Demille. This leaves a young Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) speechless as they leave the theater. This is the start of his incredible journey through filmmaking for years to come.
Sammy’s mother Mitzi Fabelman (Michelle Willaims) is a pianist and a pure artist while his father Burt Fabelman (Paul Dano) is an inventor and a computing genius. This sets the two apart immediately, setting the tone for the family and the entire film. Family bonds are shown to be strong between the characters in the film, even when love seems to be so far for some. When Sammy meets his uncle, something shifts for the young man. He realizes he should make films and should pursue his dream.
After he gets more equipment, he starts to make better films. For Sammy, it was all about the love of the story. This planted a seed that later blossomed into the gift of telling great tales. After a while, he knew this was his path and so did those around him.

Life Changes
The family friend Benny Loewy (Seth Rogan,) becomes entangled into the family after a camping trip they all go on together. Benny is portrayed as a decent man, friendly, and very humorous. When the Fablemans move away for Bruce’s new job, the next camera enters Sammy’s life.
The tale then twists into a story about love and loss through the lens of an Arri. We all experience emotions in different ways but one fact remains true; they are powerful human conditions that can create profound lessons. Sometimes loss is not the end, but a new beginning as bittersweet as it may be.
Since Spielberg began his career he has been making films better and better. Since his creation of what we deem a “blockbuster,” Steven has been telling incredible stories. He is a household name as a career commercial film director. His work alone has made infinite dreams come true while entertaining millions. This story loosely based on his life should be celebrated.
‘The Fablemans’ did not have to use fancy camera moves or angles to be exciting, every push was calculated exactly to the tempo of the scene, only something a master of his craft can pull off. The years and love created a great filmmaker just like Sammy seems to be changing into towards the end of the film.
A New Era
This era of Cinema is coming to a close as streaming and television command the screen. Film always reflects society, and society is at a turning point that even Neil Howe would say is vital to the future of American Cinema. This is a bad thing for some aspects of film, especially the evolution of directors like Steven. The love for Cinema seems to have shifted into a love for constant content.

Spielberg may be one of the last of his kind. I don’t wish this to be true, but as we evolve as a species, so does the way we take in entertainment. The evolution of an artist is always their own experience. The evolution of the industry is like a mirror to current society, and this means things will change as fast as the world around us. Talented directors like Steven won’t disappear, but the types of stories told will and therefore we may never see another like him.
Spielberg’s Undeniable Success
Watching this film makes you realize how much Steven has cared about telling his stories through the lens of a camera. ‘The Fabelmans’ is a great tale told about the passion it takes to create a life of success based on your passions and strongest abilities.
‘The Fabelmans’ is out in theaters now. The way to see any of Spielberg’s movies is to plop down in a theater seat and enjoy. Cinema in theaters is different than at home, this may be something the younger generation loses out on. Directors like Spielberg make movies for the experience it provides in those seats. Not at home.
So I pose a question to you…
If Sammy never sat in that theater, would Spielberg exist or would film be the same today?

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.
I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
