Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France has begun. One of the biggest film festivals in the world is a metropolis for the latest films and what is coming next in Cinema. While not every film buff has the opportunity to attend, there is still plenty to look out for this Cannes Film Festival season. Here is everything we know before the curtain rises.

JUDGES
Cannes features a large jury of different judges from all around the world who will be judging the films that go through the festival. Judges for the main competition include Greta Gerwig, Jury President, J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nadine Labaki, and Omar Sy.
After watching the films in the competition this year, these critics will record a score for each on the following scale: four (excellent), three (good), two (average), one (poor), and zero (bad). These scores are then combined and averaged in order to receive an official score.

The Children Around the World Continue to Ask the question
WHAT IS GOING?
In the main category, there are 22 feature films to be premiered. In alphabetical order, there is ‘All The Light We Cannot Imagine’ directed by Paula Kapadia from France, India, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. This film tells the story of a Nurse in Mumbai and her roommate who take a trip to the beach to manifest their dreams. ‘Anora’ by American director Sean Baker (known for ‘The Florida Project’), is about a Brooklyn sex worker who just wants to find her happily ever after. Next up is ‘Bird’ by U.K. director Andrea Arnold, about a neglected 12-year-old finding adventure outside her home.
French filmmaker Agathe Riedinger brings us ‘Diamant Brit’ or ‘Wild Diamond’ in English, about a 19-year-old seeking reality television fame. Also from France, Jacques Audiard directed ‘Emilia Pérez’, which tells the story of a lawyer who helps a trans cartel leader. The film ‘Feng Lui Yi Dai’ or ‘Caught by the Tides’ in English is a Chinese film, directed by Jia Zhang-Ke. This film is a love story that spans from the early 2000s to the present day in China. The Italian and French film ‘Grand Tour’ is directed by Miquel Gomes and is about a young couple in 1917 trying to find each other across Asia.

‘Can I Go Home Now?’
‘Can I Go Home Now?’ will be having its market premiere at the Marche du Film on Tuesday 21st May 2024 precisely 1530h (3:30 pm) at Palais F. This is strictly for distributors, sales agents and festival programmers. Please write to [email protected] for passes.
Yorgos Lanthimos, hailing from the U.K. and the U.S. and most known for films like ‘Poor Things’ and ‘The Lobster’ has directed ‘Kinds of Kindness’. This film, featuring Emma Stone, Hunter Schafer, and Joe Alwyn, tells many stories of different people in a ‘triptych fable’. Gilles Lellouche from France gives us ‘L’Amour Ouf’ or ‘Beating Hearts’ in English. ‘L’Amour Ouf’ tells the story of two young people in 1980s France who keep finding their way back to each other. Also from France, Michel Hazanavicius brings ‘La Plus Précieuse Des Marchandises’ or ‘The Most Precious of Cargoes’ in English. This film is about a woodcutter’s wife who discovered a baby in the woods that will soon change her life.

‘Limonov – The Ballad’ is directed by Kirill Serebrennikov from Italy, France, and Spain. This film is about Eduard Limonov’s life story through Russia, America, and Europe during the second half of the 20th century. ‘Marcello Mio’ is directed by French director Christophe Honoré and is about a young woman who pretends to be her father.
One of the most anticipated films of Cannes 2024 is from American director, Francis Ford Coppola. ‘Megalopolis’ is Coppola’s return to the director’s chair after a hiatus lasting over a decade. ‘Megalopolis’, starring Adam Driver is about a post-apocalyptic New York City.
From Brazil, France, and Germany, director Karim Aïnouz brings ‘Motel Destino’, which is about a roadside sex hotel in Brazil being turned upside-down. Paul Schrader from the United States presents ‘Oh Canada’, which is about a filmmaker giving a final interview to a former student. From Italy and France, Paolo Sorrentino brings ‘Parthenope’ about the life of the title woman from the 1950s to today.

‘Pigen Med Nålen’ or ‘The Girl with the Needle’ in English, is directed by Magnus Von Horn from Denmark, Poland, and Sweden. This film tells the story of a young factory worker who pulls herself out of poverty while working as a nurse. ‘The Apprentice’ by Ali Abbasi from Canada, Denmark, and Ireland, is about a young Donald Trump’s ascent to power. Marvel superstar, Sebastian Stan, plays the former U.S. President.
Mohammad Rasoulof from Germany, France, and Iran, presents ‘The Seed of the Sacred Fig’. This film is about a judge grappling with the unrest in Tehran. While the film was met with some controversy in Iran, ‘The Seed of the Sacred Fig’ was still selected to compete in the main competition. ‘The Shroud’ by French and Canadian director, David Cronenberg, is about a man searching for who desecrated his wife’s grave. ‘The Substance’ by Coralie Fargeat from the United States, United Kingdom, and France, is about a product called the substance that greatly improves life quality until it doesn’t. The final film in the main feature competition is ‘Trei Kilometri Pana La Capitul Lumi’ or ‘Three Kilometers to the End of the World’ in English. Romanian director Emmanuel Parvu directs this film and tells the super of a 17-year-old, whose life changes after a violent attack.

LIFETIME AWARDS
This year, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Meryl Streep. The 74-year-old actor is one of, if not the, most respected actor of her generation, and it is no shock that she has received this prestigious award at Cannes. She received the award on the first day of the festival, as her voice and skill speak for her own generation and her fully-bloomed talent. This award comes as no surprise.
As the festival begins on May 14 and runs to May 25, there are plenty of releases to look forward to in each category. While some films, such as ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ will not be judges, there are still many films to be looked forward to in each category. Each film is vying for the top distributors to take them on, and it is an exciting look as to what is to come in Cinema.

Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
