The Hollywood Insider A Quiet Place Day One

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ is a spin-off of ‘A Quiet Place’, a 2018 thriller directed by John Krasinski, who also stars in the film alongside his wife, Emily Blunt. The spin-off is a prequel to the first film, following the arrival of aliens on Earth and the ruin of society as a result of the invasion. Before the frightening events experienced by Evelyn and Lee (John Krasinski and Emily Blunt) in the previous films, the world was not dominated by aliens. Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) was among the humans accustomed to the noises of a metropolis like New York City, until the moment she witnesses the arrival of the creatures on planet Earth and the resulting massacre before her eyes. Now, she, Eric (Joseph Quinn), Henri (Djimon Hounsou) and Reuben (Alex Wolff), along with her cat and other survivors, will need to learn to survive with these monster-aliens that orient themselves by the sound of their victims in the noisiest city in the world. In this new production, we can expect not only scenes of tension and suspense, but also a deeper dive into the social dynamics between the survivors and the evolution of the terror that ravages humanity. How could anyone manage to survive these otherworldly monsters? And most importantly, will Sam get her pizza? Is the prequel the scariest one yet out of the three?

Part I

‘A Quiet Place’, a 2018 film directed by John Krasinski, who also stars in the film alongside his wife, Emily Blunt. The original film tells the story of a family of five as they navigate their reality, where they must stay quiet in order to survive. Their world has been invaded by monsters who attack to kill anything and anyone that dares to make a sound. The original film was critically acclaimed for its storytelling; from the writing and directing, to the acting and sound design. ‘A Quiet Place’ has established itself as a great, character driven horror film. Its popularity led Paramount Pictures to want a sequel.

Part II

‘A Quiet Place Part II’ came out in 2020 and new cast members included Djimon Hounsou and Cillian Murphy. John Krasinski wears his director hat almost exclusively for the sequel.

Part II was quite praised for maintaining the tension and intensity of Part I. Many appreciated the expansion of the film’s world, the introduction of new characters and the continued stellar performances. Some fans thought the sequel didn’t quite match the uniqueness and the sheer groundbreaking impact of the original film. Others appreciated how deeper the second film explored the post-apocalyptic world and showcased character development. The success of the first two films and the extended world of the sequel were more than enough proof of the potential ‘A Quiet Place’ had to become a big franchise.

Day One

Will the noisiest city in the world manage to stay quiet to survive? The third installment of the ‘A Quiet Place’ franchise explores that very rather unimaginable scenario. Written by Michael Sarnoski, John Krasinski and Bryan Woods, ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ dives even deeper into the character and their respective developments. This was Sarnoski’s first franchise directing credit and the first time the franchise said goodbye to John Krasinski as a director. And what a smart choice it was to get a completely different filmmaker with a completely new perspective and style to tell this story. This is after all, a story that follows brand new characters in a different scenario and circumstance than the characters from the first two films, despite it being the same world. Sarnocki brought the “freshness” that was needed for a prequel like this to exist and succeed. Fans of the first twoA Quiet Place’ films who expect another remarkably tense thriller/ horror film, are likely to be disappointed by what is probably the most contemplative and quiet blockbuster of all time. ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ exceeds any expectation of what a big franchise film should be, and instead delivers a box office breaker film that is so thoughtfully crafted that the audience can resonate more deeply than any of the franchise’s predecessors. The way each character and performance feels so sincere and personal is a testament to not only the glorious actors Nyong’o and Quinn are, but also to the film’s brilliant writing and directing.

Is the third installment of the ‘A Quiet Place’ franchise the scariest one yet? How frightening is ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’? The short and simple answer would respectively  be “no” and “it depends”. The complex answer would be that the prequel is not worried about the next jump scare or how frightening the alien-monsters look, simply because it isn’t about scaring people or the obvious antagonists of the film. It is a film about friendship and found family. It’s about camaraderie and bravery in times of great hardship and loss. Watching those characters go from strangers to confidants, protectors and allies was just so powerful. To have fallen in love with the characters and to have been made so emotional by a third installment of a blockbuster franchise was such a delightful surprise.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
