A once unpopular fabric in the realm of high-society fashion, denim has pushed its way into luxury retail. Although it can be considered a cheap alternative to other high-quality fabrics, the customizable features of denim are part of what makes it such a universal tool for fashion. Whether it’s your classic, high-waisted jeans or an artfully distressed jacket, denim is anything but frowned upon. All it takes is a keen eye and a little self-expression to make your denim pieces pop as you style your way to luxury paradise.

Here’s how you can hop onto what’s trending now in the denim industry.

Jeans + Skirts

You probably guessed this one; jeans are always in style. Whether with a blazer and heels, or an oversized graphic tee and a pair of platform sneakers, there are infinite ways to style a pair of denim jeans. That being said, the ’80s and ’90s are back with wide-leg fits, high waists, and boyfriend cuts. Skinny jeans are out and straight-leg jeans have taken first place. On the topic of jeans, distressing and well-placed holes are still popular, but their dynamics have changed. Think more about where your jeans are distressed rather than how. Large, gaping holes on the knees and also the back of the calves are common as well as holes in the back pockets to draw attention there. Last but not least, the boot cut is back – but not any old-fashioned boot cut. Super high-waisted, minimal distressing, usually in darker-washed denim with frayed edges at the ankles. Take note: light-wash denim is losing traction and fashion icons are opting for a more traditional color of denim for their jeans.

When it comes to denim skirts, however, it’s a different story. They were decidedly popular only a season or two ago, but are now a thing of the past. That being said, if you can pull off a short denim skirt over a pair of dark leggings or tights, it won’t be frowned upon, but don’t expect to see celebrities sporting the style. If you want to be bold by swimming against the stream of current fashion, stick with dark denim and high-waist for your skirt – distressed or not – it’s up to you. Along with this, choose your accessories wisely. It’s also not ideal for your denim skirt to be the centerpiece of your look – find something flashy to draw attention away from your slightly outdated denim choice if you dare.

Jackets + Dresses

Moving on to more untraditional denim pieces, let’s review the denim jacket. Here in this next fashion season, we’re seeing a downtrend with jackets in general, but especially the denim jacket. Whether it’s distressed or not, light wash or dark wash, it just doesn’t stand out from the crowd anymore. Instead, try a trench coat or blazer to give your look that elegant flair to set you apart from those still attempting to make denim jackets wearable.

Although denim jackets are down, denim dresses are up, which might be somewhat contradictory since they are part of the same family. However, a denim dress is a base outfit and needs to be accompanied by an arrangement of accessories and/or a statement clutch or hat. This is a warning: a denim dress and a pair of classy shoes are not enough to stand out from the crowd of regulars; you must be extra to be the best. Whether it’s a pop of colorful lipstick, a snakeskin bag, or a pair of Gucci glasses, you need something to add that luxurious boost to your look. If you see someone walking around in a denim dress without one of these must-haves, offer for them to borrow one of yours simply to save them the disgrace of a fashion failure.

Colored + Patterned Denim

Now, not all denim is created equal. The trend of coloring, bleaching, or embroidering denim has emerged fiercely. This is definitely a hit-or-miss trend. Bright-colored denim can either be a fashion or flop, depending on the rest of your outfit. Looking for a monochromatic vibe? Feel free to experiment with colored denim with a matching jacket and purse. But as always, too much color can be a slippery slope. If you’re looking at patterned denim, stick with classy, modern designs that don’t draw too much attention to unwanted areas or create an unattractive illusion of your body. In addition, don’t pair patterned denim with another patterned piece that has an opposing look; it simply won’t mesh.

If you’re feeling creative, and just a little bit intuitive, consider bleaching or embroidering your own denim. First, find a pair of trendy jeans that fit you great and find inspiration from what other denim influencers have been wearing. Whether it’s color block bleach or dainty embroidered flowers, your creativity can shine through your fashion. Just trust the process and turn your little mistakes into big wins. One thing to keep in mind is not to strive for perfection, only beauty. Besides, who says you can’t make your own elegant clothing? An added benefit is that you can tell everyone who asks that you crafted the denim yourself, proving yourself to be a true fashion connoisseur and certifying your jeans as one-of-a-kind. You won’t find anyone else in the fashion industry with denim quite like yours.

All Denim Outfits

Last but not least the all-denim outfit is a proven gem when it comes to high fashion. But before you go to your closet and throw on the closest denim items, make sure you approach the situation with style in mind. Some things are simply not meant to be – unless you possess the audacity to prove the standards wrong. One major red flag to keep in mind is dark wash paired with light wash. Can it be done? Yes, but can it be done well? Hardly. Unless you’re very intentional about your denim design, try to avoid pairing two drastically different tones aside from creating a dramatic effect. Also, great denim needs great accessories, so don’t forget your jewelry and shoes and the effect they’ll have on your look. Lastly, there is such a thing as too much denim. Although it is a very versatile material, it’s not for everyone or everything. It’s simply up to you how far you want to push the line and if, perhaps, you dare to cross it. Denim is the epitome of luxury streetwear and, if styled right, can raise the stakes of your look to the top tier of effortless style.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
