As one of Netflix’s standout hits, ‘Emily in Paris’ (2020-) enters its fourth season with a two-part format. Part I, released in August, set the stage for more drama, and Part II has just arrived, leaving fans eager to see if it finally resolves the love triangle that’s kept viewers hooked since Season 3. The show continues to follow Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) and it delivers more of the over-the-top and very glamorous, fashion-filled world of Paris paired with the soapy chaos and escapism that fans have come to love.

The show

‘Emily in Paris’ (2020-) is a lighthearted dramedy that follows Emily Cooper, a young marketing executive from Chicago who unexpectedly moves to Paris for work. The audience experiences the cultural challenges, complicated romance and career hurdles Emily goes through, making the story rather compelling and highly entertaining.

Season four

The fourth season picks up where it left off, with Emily juggling her chaotic love life and her rather unpredictable work life. The love triangle (or square?) involving Gabriel, Alfie, and Camille remains central, and I must say that it starts to feel very repetitive. Even though the scenarios can sometimes stretch believability, her work life at Agence Grateau keeps the plot moving. All the marketing stunts and corporate drama make for very entertaining content. In Part II, we meet Marcello in Rome and the Roman atmosphere is simply unmatched. It is the freshness we’ve been craving throughout the entire season.

Characters

The complicated nature of each character plays a big part in why fans keep coming back. Our main cast continues to deliver believable and compelling performances. Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Camille Razat and of course Lily Collins continue to serve the fans with breathtaking looks and great performances. Emily (Lily Collins) remains the heart of the show, blending her character’s undying optimism with moments of vulnerability, which is exactly what makes the show so compelling. Mindy (Ashley Park) continues to shine with her musical numbers. And Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) continues to embody sophistication with her sharp and witty personality. We can also always count on the show to supply new faces and characters that will shake things up for better or for worse. Eugenio Franceschini stole our hearts as the newest character Marcello – and Emily’s brand new love interest. The ensemble cast’s chemistry and comedic timing elevate the plot, keeping the show engaging.

The visuals

What the season lacks in the narrative department, it makes up for with its stunning visuals that have become a trademark for the series. The stunning Parisian backdrop, glamorous fashion, and sophisticated parties are the focal point of the show and the reason why many come back to the show. The show embraces the city as a character in itself, capturing classic landmarks and both the charming and luxurious settings that Paris has to offer. The cinematography highlights the show’s glamorous, escapist appeal. The sets are carefully crafted, from Emily’s cozy, stylish Parisian apartment to Agence Grateau’s modern (yet very Parisian) offices. The production design perfectly captures the Parisian perfect blend of whimsical and glamorous atmosphere.

We didn’t spent too much time in Rome, but the stunning Roman sights was enough to make us fall in love with Rome. From the touristy and classic landmarks of Rome to the endlessly charming Italian country side, the visuals from the Roman episodes were more than enough to have us looking forward to our time in Rome next season. From the vibrant colors and lavish fashion to dreamlike sets and stunning shots, the show knows how to deliver when it comes to visuals.

What lacks

When it comes to the show’s flaws, what immediately comes to mind is the romance. Not to say that the show doesn’t know how to do romance, but the love square – which now might be a pentagon with Marcello in the mix – is way too repetitive. There seems to be no innovation when it comes to Emily’s plot lines or any of the people involved in the love pentagon. The romance plot lines, especially the now-pentagonal love dynamic, feel repetitive. While the show occasionally shifts focus to Emily’s professional life and Agence Grateau, it inevitably circles back to the same romantic entanglements. Supporting characters like Mindy, Sylvie, and Luc (Bruno Gouery) offer charming, humorous subplots, often more engaging than Emily’s main storyline.

Despite the criticisms, season four remains enjoyable for those who love its soapy quality and the escapist feeling that we can all count on the series to bring. When we thought that the love square would come to an end and reach a conclusion, they decide to add another one to the mix, making it a love pentagon. While the show may need to introduce some fresh elements and main plot points to avoid losing the audience’s interest, ‘Emily in Paris’ (2020-) still manages to entertain with its humor, drama, and the dreamy Parisian charm. Now that Emily has been relocated to Agence Grateau‘s Roman office, the possibilities for new plot lines are endless.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
