The-Hollywood-Insider- Daredevil-Born-Again REVIEW

Marvel attempts to introduce their most different character from the MCU norm into the set universe with the 2015’s Daredevil’s sequel ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.

Created by the legendary minds of Stan Lee and Bill Everett for the 1964 comic ‘Daredevil #1’. Daredevil has grown to become one of the most popular characters in the world of superheroes, frequently considered to be a direct equivalent to Batman to the point of both characters being portrayed by Ben Affleck at some point in his career.

Being the protagonist of surprisingly few adaptations, with the first one ‘Daredevilbeing as recent as 2003. Despite this late incorporation to the superhero adaptation world, especially when considering the character’s popularity in the comic world since its creation, the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen saw a well-deserved successful adaptation upon the release of 2015’s ‘Daredevil’ Netflix show, with many fans considering Cox’s portrayal to be the version of Daredevil they had been waiting for, and devastating many with its cancelation back in 2018.

Daredevil: Born Again’ brings back the character from its 7-year protagonistic hiatus. Acting as a sequel to the Netflix show, ‘Born Again’ brings back Charlie Cox to play his outstanding role as The Man with No Fear once again. Vincent D’Onofrio also reprises his role as the infamous Kingpin, and Margarita Levieva stars as Daredevil’s new love interest Heather Glenn, allowing both old fans as well as new ones to enjoy this new era of the beloved character.

While ‘Born Again’ started as a reboot for the character, choosing it to be a continuation was a good one. It allows the writers to lean on an already pre-existing and successfully proven ambience. Yet, because we’ve only seen the first couple of episodes, this same thing can also place the show in a very sensible line if not executed correctly and diverging much from the original series. Making that which was meant to engage long-time fans of the character push them away instead.

The Man With No Fear

Matt Murdock/Daredevil has always been portrayed as a troubled character, with his life being a concurring mix of joy and tragedy, as seen by the chemical accident that took his eyesight when saving someone at the mere age of nine. This unique aspect was carried well into the 2015 ‘Daredevil’, with the show accurately showing a more human aspect of the hero.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ strongly follows its predecessor’s greatly marked footsteps. It turns the knob up to 11, allowing the audience to be hooked on its story from the first couple of minutes. The show dives deeper into the legal aspects of Matt Murdock’s life, giving us a more profound understanding of the character and his intentions, but also analyzes more in-depth discussions on the reasons for his retirement as Daredevil as seen in the Netflix show.

It journeys the humanity of not just a vigilante life seen with Matt, but also of their adversaries. Reminding us that each of these characters is still human with a life and struggles of their own. Through the exploration into Daredevil’s psyche, we are able to understand the evolution that Matt’s character, those existing around him, and his surroundings had during his seven-year hiatus from the vigilante image.

The show awefully manages to create intrigue almost immediately, perfectly giving us a sense of continuity and a spiritual successor to its beloved predecessor, allowing itself for a seamless transition and immersion into this gritty masterpiece of a world that we fans have seen and been craving for in 7 years.

Eyesight of The Blind Devil

One of the things that made the Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ unique was its darker and more serious Noir-inspired ambiance, compared to other Marvel works. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is surely not different, doubling down on the already quite gritty and brutal aspects that made the IP popular.

The show gorgeously implements camera techniques, alongside really astonishingly crafted sound design, utilizing it to accurately showcase Daredevil’s abilities even outside the costume, allowing for a way better understanding of the character. Utilizing lightning to both increase the immersion and mirror Matt’s mindspace in certain situations.

The camera movement felt kind of wonky, with there rarely being a still shot, to what can be interpreted as Daredevil’s constant, shifting perception of the world, his perpetual state of heightened awareness and even as a physicalization of his inner turmoil. It allows the camera to feel more personified, almost as if it acted as an extra reflection of the Matt Murdock persona.

Adapting Hell

Despite having few adaptations of his own, Daredevil has had his fair share of cameos and alternates across the Marvel Multiverse and its History.

A version of The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen that stands out from the rest is the Matthew Murdoch from Earth-311, also known as the world of the Neil Gaiman written series Marvel 1602’. In Gaiman’s reimagining of the Marvel Universe during the Elizabethan era. Here Matt is known as The Bard, where while exploring a cave that is unexplainable covered with a rare yet intriguing glowing green substance as a young fearless and extremely inquisitive child, after some further investigation to satisfy his endless curiosity, Matt is eventually compelled to taste the rare substance, a choice that took his sight but also greatly enhanced his other senses.

This version, instead of the Daredevil we’ve grown used to that focuses on more hand-to-hand combat, centers surprisingly in a more espionage and discrete combat style. Using a bow as a main weapon and his abilities to approach objectives undetected. While Daredevil in 616 represents his fearless nature by jumping right into the center of danger regardless of the situation, Matt’s version in Earth-311 showcases this by actions, whether it is infiltrating an extremely dangerous place to obtain information or facing danger with impossible odds and attempting life-threating acrobats in a time where such aspects are even more dangerous than nowadays, The Bard shows reminds readers that it isn’t the abilities or the circumstances that make a hero but the resilience and effort upon any situation regardless of the time.

Even though ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is attached to Netflix’s continuity, it still greatly shows us a different and “evolved” version of The Man With No Fear. The show stands as a reminder of the reality behind one’s choices and the ramifications of these, it teaches audiences that if we put in the necessary effort and don’t give up, we can accomplish anything we can accomplish anything we set our minds to.

Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
