A Shattered Legacy: Unraveling the Complexities of Hernandez’s Life

The story of ‘American Sports Story: The Aaron Hernandez Case’ is a tragic and deeply complex narrative, depicting Aaron Hernandez’s abusive upbringing, his promising beginnings as a high school football star, and the circumstances that ultimately led him down a dark path. The series offers an unsettling yet extremely accurate depiction of abusive relationships and their long-lasting effects, which can create generations of victims. Aaron’s relationship with his father, his struggles with his sexuality, and the head trauma he sustained while playing football begin to paint a bigger picture of what drove Aaron to become a heartless killer. These elements are presented in a somewhat clichéd, yet tasteful manner, allowing the audience to understand how they shaped Aaron’s personality and future decisions.

The Children Around the World Continue to Ask the question

The series excels at developing Aaron’s character, presenting him as more than just a troubled person with a dark past. Rather, he is shown as someone willing to do awful things to maintain his image. Aaron, portrayed by Josh Andrés Rivera, is an incredibly layered character, with a depth of emotion brought to life through Rivera’s powerful performance. We see a mentally unstable individual, conflicted by his emotions, leading himself and others down a path of destruction. The series invites viewers to reflect on the effects of social issues and mental health on different people and the importance of addressing these obstacles before they snowball into deeper, irreversible issues. The show does not shy away from these taboo topics, helping us understand that Aaron was not only a victim of circumstance but also responsible for his own choices.

Pacing and Structure: A Riveting Rollercoaster Ride

The structure and pacing of the narrative are among the series’ strongest aspects. It depicts the real-life crimes and events in an exaggerated yet remarkably accurate manner, leaving viewers thinking, “No way that actually happened.” The series is not a typical true-crime docu-series or courtroom drama; rather, it focuses on the people involved and their accounts, creating a suspenseful, engaging story. The crimes and events are not presented in chronological order, keeping viewers on edge and prompting them to ask questions that will be answered throughout the series.

The series uses flashbacks to explore Aaron’s childhood, his relationship with his fiancée, and his psyche leading up to the murder of Odin Lloyd. This nonlinear form of storytelling is incredibly effective, though it can be disorienting at times, especially without dates presented on screen. Still, this narrative choice is crucial in helping us understand Aaron’s fractured mental state during these key events, allowing us to step into his shoes during his crimes.

The editing style is also unique, as it integrates real footage of Aaron Hernandez playing football in college, splicing it with the series’ depictions of these iconic plays throughout his career. The seamless transitions between these moments are masterfully executed, immersing us in the field and tapping into the nostalgia of sports viewers while maintaining continuity with the actors portraying these figures. In terms of production, this choice is beneficial, as sports films and series often struggle to capture the true essence of football and its impact on players. This series avoids that pitfall by using real footage of hits between players, which viewers can hear and feel in its depiction on screen.

The Fumble and Recovery

While the series is incredibly structured and gripping to watch, it does not come without its flaws. The series heavily focuses on Aaron’s personal relationships in a way that feels soap-opera-esque, especially in scenes portraying his relationship with his mother. The dialogue feels corny in some places, though this is no fault of the talented cast, who put a great deal of emotion into their performances. Yet, awkward lines throughout can be incredibly distracting in such a serious story that is depicting real crimes and people affected by them.

The series also treats Aaron’s mental health and sexuality in a way that feels significant but simplified in its presentation. While the series addresses these parts of Aaron’s life, at times it feels surface-level in its execution, not fully exploring Aaron’s personality and instead focusing on these elements to define who he was. The series is carried by Josh Rivera’s performance, as well as the supporting cast, who help create a human side to these complex characters, making their interactions with one another a core reason to binge the series.

A Complex Tale of Fame, Tragedy, and Consequence

‘American Sports Story: The Aaron Hernandez Case’ is an incredibly well-crafted series that allows viewers to look at the life of one of the NFL’s most infamous figures. The series at times feels melodramatic in its presentation of events, but this feels necessary for the story and themes presented. Overall, the series is not a one-to-one recreation of the events that led Aaron to take the lives of two men and himself; instead, it embellishes these people and figures to create a memorable, impactful series. The series succeeds in its execution, creating a story that forces viewers to grapple with questions about their own identities and the toll that fame and expectations take on people.

Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
