The Hollywood Insider Bad Boys Ride or Die Review Will Smith

It’s such a bittersweet experience to see some great stars returning to roles that made so many fall in love with them. The bitterness comes from the fact that the new installment could potentially be so inferior, or it could be extremely superior; either way, a new installment could ruin whatever came before. The sweetness comes from the nostalgia of seeing a favorite character(s) again, especially after several years. After what seemed to have been the end of the comedic action saga in “Bad Boys: For Life”, and with the knowledge of the risk of potentially ruining one of the biggest franchises of their careers, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence once again for an unbeatable police duo in ‘Bad Boys’.

The action & comedy duo

Written by Chris Bremner, Miami’s most famous detectives go beyond and manage to become the most wanted fugitives in Miami and probably the Nation, as the FBI is involved. The prey became the predator entitled to a price on their heads. Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) have no choice but to fight to the end to protect the late and beloved Captain Howard’s (Joe Pantoliano) reputation as well as clear their names. Our top tier co-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah return after the immense success of the third installment. The ‘Bad Boys’ franchise has always been known for combining Smith’s and Lawrence’s two strengths: action and comedy. It has been four films and not only does the action-comedy combination still work, but their chemistry is just out of this world.

The director duo

Between the speed of the cameras in the action sequences and the drastic changes in tone delivery, perhaps the most jarring part of the film is the fast pacing, but it is also one of the strongest features of the film. El Arbi and Fallah are so on point with the balance between action sequences, sweet moments and comedic relief that it all just works. After a rather complex period in their careers, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are back with the enthusiasm and the very specific characteristics of their previous work like ‘Ms. Marvel’, ‘Rebel’ and ‘Gangsta’. ‘Bad Boys’ 4 seems to represent the return of promising directors responsible for great audiovisual pieces, an opportunity the directing duo could not pass on. Especially after having the confirmation of success after the third installment, also directed by the duo, the filmmakers had more creative freedom in expanding on the frenetic style seen in other works.

Even though these joint elements could make the film feel exaggerated and extravagantly hectic at times, the pure joy and excitement that it brings to people is worth all the chaotic energy. Who doesn’t like a little chaos? It is so curious to see how this desire to explore each moment and movement of the action in cinema can taint the audience in a positive way. ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ is a great example of that. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah transform and compliment common scenarios with jokes, simple and sophisticated. They manage explore different angles of movements from what would be considered repetitive by those who are avid consumers of the genre. This sets them apart from other directors. It is truly remarkable to see what the directing duo has brought to and done for the franchise.

The Bad Boys duo

Even in their outrageous performances, Lawrence and Smith manage to bring us in and keep us engaged the entire time, never questioning how convenient or real a scene or a moment is. It is such a delight to see these characters play off each other and make us fall more and more in love with them and their friendship. It goes without saying that without Lawrence and Smith there would be no film or franchise, but it somehow rings more true in this film. Without their undeniable chemistry and charisma, the film would have fallen flat. It would have been a very impressive editing of “cool shots”. They almost abuse the usage of slow motion to enhance the comedic genius that is Lawrence. They play with perspective with the camera taking on a gamified characteristic. Each factor serves to heighten and embellish the action and comedy in the film.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah on the director’s chairs and Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as leads proves once again to be the perfect marriage between directors and actors. The fourth chapter of the franchise not only offers novelty to the saga but it also works in some action thrillers from the 1990s and 2000s structure into the franchise. The structure may not please some of the audience of today who are just looking for freshness and innovations, but the fourth installment delivered all the fun and excitement that shaped films of the period. The writing was not necessarily original and it was rather predictable. The soundtrack by Lorne Balfe was very fun and very fitting for the franchise and ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ as a stand alone film.

From the directing and acting, to the cinematography and editing, all contributed to create a great film. No matter what age you are, anyone can watch ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ and have a great time.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
