Music, Fame, and Fandom
Two of the biggest artists in the industry, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, sat down for an exclusive Q&A after a screening of ‘Wicked’ at the Directors Guild of America’s theater in Los Angeles. The event, attended by Academy and guild members, wasn’t just about the highly anticipated film—it also gave fans a front-row seat to the mutual admiration between these two powerhouse artists. And, if the hints they dropped are anything to go by, a collaboration might just be in the works.
Eilish, known for her easy-going yet intensely passionate demeanor, couldn’t hide her excitement. “I love this girl so much, and I love this movie so much,” she gushed, speaking to Grande. “And I still use the YouTube channel that’s been my personal channel since I was about 11. You can actually find old interviews of you from 2014 where I commented, ‘I’m Team Ari.’ I didn’t even realize they were still up, but I guess I’ve been a fan forever.”
Grande, clearly in awe, responded directly from the heart. “My team was like, ‘Who’s your dream person to do this with?’ And I was like, ‘Billie… but she’s not gonna say yes. She’s too busy. She’s too fabulous.’ But she did, and I was like, ‘Oh, shit. Now I’m so nervous.’
We all know Grande for her tender love and soft touch, but the bond with Eilish was somehow extra pure. Eilish revealed that she had a special nickname for Grande before they met. “I used to call you ‘Ari’ to my brother, and he’d be like, ‘Don’t call her Ari, you don’t know her!’” she laughed.
What makes this dynamic so unique is that while Eilish has long admired and looked up to Grande, the feeling is clearly mutual.

A Wicked Journey for Grande
While the night was full of laughter, the conversation also gave a rare glimpse into Grande’s intense audition process for ‘Wicked’. “I went in for my first audition not knowing which role I’d be considered for,” she shared. “So they had me sing four songs: ‘No One Mourns the Wicked,’ ‘Popular,’ ‘The Wizard and I,’ and ‘Defying Gravity.’ But, I mean, I was in all pink. It was obvious. No one was hiding anything.”
She continued, “My final chemistry test was three hours long. I was a basket case by the end. I remember thinking, ‘I’ve left everything I had in this room.’ My lashes were even falling off from crying so much, so I just left them on the mirror. It was long and thorough, as it should be. These roles have to be earned.”
Eilish had one response: “You earned it, dude.”
Grande, who has been a through-and-through fan of ‘Wicked’, also opened up about how much the role meant to her. “This has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I know that sounds cliché, but it’s true. I used to sing ‘Popular’ in my bedroom, pretending I was Glinda. So to actually get to step into this role, to work with Cynthia [Erivo], and to bring this story to life—it’s surreal.”

The Moment That Set Fans Buzzing
Just when the Q&A seemed to be wrapping up, Eilish totally blurted something out that sent fans into a whirlwind. “OK, a few more songs and then we go,” she said before catching herself. “Songs? Did I say songs? Oh my god, I meant questions. I’m on tour, you guys. I’m used to saying that. Sorry.”
The audience immediately gasped, catching onto the possibility that Eilish’s words hinted at something bigger. Grande certainly didn’t shy away from it, smiling as she responded, “We do need to do that, though.”
Eilish, without hesitation, confirmed, “I would love to do that.”

This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
