Since it was founded in 1999, Coachella has now gained a reputation as one of the most, if not the most, popular music festivals in North America. Throughout the years, it has delivered a high-caliber lineup of the world’s most popular artists to perform in the Indio, California desert. Since the early years, the festival’s headliners have been acts that are at the top of their class and dominate in their genre. From past headlining acts ranging from Beck, Björk, Prince, and Jay-Z to more recent headliners consisting of Drake, Calvin Harris, Ariana Grande, and Beyoncé, Coachella has always been able to present its attendees with a diversity of elite artists that dominated the global charts.
With an impressive and expansive year of music in 2022 and speculated album releases in 2023, the predictions for this year’s headliners were broad with possibilities. Annually, the lineup is revealed on January 3, but since there was no reveal on the traditional date, attendees and fans of the glamorous festival were left waiting indefinitely for the release of the lineup, as Coachella tends to be absolutely inactive on social media until the release of the lineup. Dropping seven days after the expected lineup reveal, the headliners and other performing acts are finally disclosed for the two-weekend event.

Coachella 2023
The headliners for Coachella 2023 are Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, and Frank Ocean. The 2023 lineup has already created many historical firsts for the festival. The Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny makes his mark as the first Latino artist to headline the festival. BLACKPINK, who are currently on their world tour for their sophomore album ‘BORN PINK,’ become the first K-pop act and the first Asian act to headline Coachella. With Frank Ocean, the three headliners make it the first time that none of Coachella’s headliners are white. The headliners are representative of the diversity in this year’s lineup. With genres from rock, reggaeton, K-pop, rap, R&B, and more, Coachella continues to brand itself as a globally inclusive music festival.

Bad Bunny, Becky G, and Rosalía Represent Spanish Music This Year
Earning himself a Grammy nomination for his 2022 album ‘Un Verano Sin Ti,’ Bad Bunny adds to his growing reputation as the biggest superstar in Latin music today. Having only released his debut album in 2018, Bad Bunny and his staple Latin trap music has taken the world by storm. Gaining notice and collaborations with large artists such as Drake and J Balvin, Bad Bunny has solidified himself as a growing force in the industry worldwide. Upon topping the charts on music streaming apps and grossing over $435 million on his fourth concert tour titled ‘World’s Hottest Tour,’ Bad Bunny’s prominence, popularity, and impact is undeniable and his inclusion in this year’s headliner lineup reinforces the prestige of Coachella’s lineups.

Other notable artists joining Bad Bunny in the Latin artist and Spanish-speaking artist pool are Becky G, Rosalía, Eladio Carrión, and DannyLux. Becky G made an appearance onstage with J-Hope from BTS at his headlining performance at Lollapalooza 2022. Rosalía had a big year in 2022 with the release of her third studio album ‘Motomami.’ ‘Motomami’ performed well critically, garnering a 94 on Metacritic and tying with SZA’s ‘SOS’ as the top-rated albums by female artists in 2022. ‘Motomami’ also beat out ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’ for Album of the Year at the Latin Grammys, which caused a bit of controversy due to Rosalía not being an artist of Latin background since she is from Spain.

BLACKPINK, Jackson Wang, & DPR IAN + DPR LIVE Extend K-pop’s Appearance on the Coachella Lineup
Since late 2022, BLACKPINK has been on their world tour ‘Born Pink World Tour,’ traveling to over 50 cities in North America and Europe. Now, with the release of their concert dates in countries throughout Asia, ‘Born Pink World Tour’ is on track to gross over $200 million, earning BLACKPINK the title of having the highest-grossing world tour by a girl group in history. With having only released their second album ‘BORN PINK’ in late 2022, many people are wondering how BLACKPINK will be able to deliver a headlining performance that will exceed 90 minutes. However, ‘BORN PINK’ did debut on the top spot of the Billboard 200, so the quality of the music and their capability of pulling a crowd in North America is outstanding. Nonetheless, the concert turnout and plethora of viral performance videos negate any beliefs that BLACKPINK was not ready to be on the headlining stage.
Joining BLACKPINK on Coachella’s K-pop lineup is Jackson Wang and DPR LIVE with DPR IAN. Jackson Wang, the Hong Kong singer and rapper from former JYPE boy group GOT7, continues his ‘Magic Man’ world tour in Coachella. DPR IAN and DPR LIVE just ended their ‘2022 Regime World Tour’ in 2022. Jackson and the DPR men are not strangers to festival stages as they have all taken the stage at Head in the Clouds Festival, which is produced by 88rising.

Frank Ocean Returns After 2020 Cancellation | Other Genres at Coachella This Year
With the global tragedy of the coronavirus pandemic, Coachella 2020, which featured Frank Ocean as a headliner, was unfortunately canceled. Frank Ocean was confirmed as a headliner long ago, so the real mysteries of the headliner lineup were for the other two spots. With ‘Blonde’ being only Frank Ocean’s second studio album with a release date of 2016, it is predicted that Frank Ocean will be releasing another project this year before he brings his timeless R&B neo-soul music to the main stage.
Metro Boomin, Doechii, Latto, A Boogie, Flo Milli, and breakout rapper of 2022 GloRilla (who was nominated for Best Rap Performance at the 2023 Grammys) are some notable hip-hop names this year. Electronic artists such as Porter Robinson, Labrinth, Kaytranada, Fisher, Jai Wolf, and Chris Lake bring a broad spectrum of EDM genres to the lineup. Former headliners Gorillaz and Björk also joined this year’s lineup. Other notable names on the lineup are Charli XCX, Kali Uchis, Burna Boy, Blondie, and EarthGang. A special notice that Calvin Harris will be returning to the desert was included on the lineup poster, so there may be something big that Harris may have scheduled for the three-day event.
Coachella 2023 Weekend 1 will be on April 14-16 and Coachella 2023 Weekend 2 will be on April 21-23. Presale for Coachella passes will begin on Friday, January 13, 2023, at 11 AM PT.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.
I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
