The-Hollywood-Insider-Your-Friendly-Neighborhood-Spider-Man-REVIEW

From the deep ties of The Web of Destiny, Marvel finally gives fans a new take on Spider-Man’s origin story with a show that reminds of a more nostalgic era.

Spider-Man is the superhero with the most alternate versions, with a total number reaching more than 100 different iterations of the wall-crawler across all media. Some are similar to one another while others drastically diverge from the young projector of the borough of Queens, but each is unique in its own way telling the hero’s story in a distinctive and creative way.

Although the MCU has gotten audiences used to Spider-Man being a multi-universal hero, The character didn’t really expand from the Queen’s borough in a significant way until the 1967 ‘Spider-Man’ animated TV series 5 years after the character’s first appearance in ‘Amazing Fantasy #15’. Even in other versions the webbed hero mostly stayed within their respective cities, expanding his interactions beyond NYC until the early to mid-70s.

With ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’, creator Jeff Trammell attempts to return the character to its roots with a new retelling of Spiderman’s origin story, mixing tradition with A modern perspective of the character, In order to bring fans a nostalgic yet fresh take on the famous character. Starring Hudson Thames as the voice of Peter Parker, Kari Wahlgren as Peter’s widowed aunt May Parker, Grace Song as Peter’s best friend Nico Minoru, and Colman Domingo as Norman Osborn.

The Web of Life and Destiny

The legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created Spider-Man as an attempt to create a superhero that readers could relate to, as a response to the surge in teenage demand for comic books seen at the time. While his predecessors were focused on the “super” part of Superhero, Lee designed Peter Parker to be grounded on reality. This is exactly why the hero quickly became Marvel’s most popular character, because he was a regular person with problems.

‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ accurately brings the “neighborhood” part of Spider-Man’s title back to a protagonistic role. Even though the show features some locations in Manhattan like the Oscorp Tower, the show focuses more on Spidey’s adventures in Queens rather than New York City as a whole. The show brings the return of a shyly socially awkward nerd Peter Parker who makes punny quippy jokes mid-battle that appeared in the original comics, radically pulling away from the more naivety and socially adjusted Peter shown in the MCU. Although drastic this change matches better with the low of the show’s story.

Despite the show’s more lighthearted vibe it still explores more serious themes compared to many iterations of Spider-Man, opening conversation on topics like racism, social injustices, and the impactful effects of stereotypes. Focusing more emphasis on Spider-Man’s inner struggles and the moral dilemmas that are showcased in the battle between good and evil. These themes allow the world to feel more realistic.

A Nostalgic Veil

Created as a love letter to Spider-Man fans, ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ was designed to look and feel nostalgic from its beginning. From the cover arts of the five-issue comic book prequel series to the various Easter eggs that can be found in almost every shot.

One primarily noticeable element is the show’s animation style, while aiming to resemble the look of classic Spider-Man comics, the show’s 3D cel-shaded animation is somewhat reminiscent of 2003’s ‘Spider-Man: The New Animated Series’ acting as a successfully refined evolution of the shows visual vibe. The character designs astonishingly draw inspiration from the legendary aesthetic that Jack Kirby’s designs are known for with a more modern flare. These perfectly create a unique balance between nostalgia and something fresher without feeling choppy or null.

The show’s score and sound design seamlessly fits with the pacing and story, making the action scenes dynamic while setting the correct stage for the non-action ones, allowing the audience to truly immerse themselves into the piece’s vibrant world. This one doesn’t fall behind when it comes to nostalgic elements, with even the show’s theme song taking some samples from the 1967 animated series’ iconic theme song.

The Intricate Life of Yet Another Spidey

Because its subject has been having so many different versions, some of which haven’t been well received by audiences, ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ stands on a thin sheet of ice. Especially after Marvel gave fans the three highly successful and beloved adaptations of the character portrayed by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and most recently Tom Holland.

The show manages to keep the story in a familiar zone while still delivering a new creative take on Spider-Man’s origin story, shifting things just enough to create an intriguing story with fun unexpected moments without altering the core tale we all know and love. Yet, some aspects of this version make it seem to be a tad bit more like an altered version of the MCU established timeline as seen with Peter Parker’s internship and the total absence of Uncle Ben.

When it comes to a multiversal standpoint ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ seems to fit more into the MCU version of the workings of the multiverse, where more subtle alterations to the “main” timeline create alternate timelines rather than introducing audiences to a self-contained universe with its own set of rules and even cosmic entities that are more prominent on the comic’s multiverse.

Ultimately, ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ acts as a Darwin’s bark spider balancing at the center of the ever-growing cobweb that is Marvel, connecting the best and most beloved aspects from both Marvel Comics and the MCU, interlocking the past to present, through a delicate yet intricate tapestry. It stands as the living personification of Marvel’s legendary 86 years of history and as yet another pillar keeping the legacy of the magnificent Stan Lee. By fostering outstanding creativity and gorgeous methods of storytelling ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ makes a great addition to Marvel’s infinity of everlasting multiverses.

Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
