The Hollywood Insider Great Expectations Review Olivia Colman

Introduction

Adaptations of the works of Charles Dickens are numerous. Like ‘Shakespeare,’ if you can think of an alteration to the text, it has been done. Dickens’ characters have sung, worn modern clothing, and even been played by muppets. FX in partnership with Hulu, has recently released their newest version of ‘Great Expectations’. The show sets up the classic story in an engaging way. Dickens’ penchant for poetry shines through Pip, the orphan who dreams of a better life. ‘Great Expectations’ follows Pip as he tries to rise in the social hierarchy. Young Pip is played by Tom Sweet. He combines a poetic and romantic disposition with an ambition that makes him stand out. He is raised by his cruel sister Sarah, played by Hayley Squires, and his kind brother-in-law Joe, played by Owen McDonnell. These characters not only give Pip a template to contrast himself with, but they also use him to their advantage. Enter Mr. Pumblechook, a delightful name, played by Matt Berry. Matt Berry, who is gifted with a uniquely expressive voice, is a brief but wonderful addition to the cast.

Mr. Pumblechook is the man who is responsible for the relationship between Pip and the woman who will change his life, Miss. Havisham. Olivia Colman is in fine form as the formidable jilted bride. Colman, who is always a delight no matter what genre she is in, displays a tender kind of pain. Although she is unwell, Miss Havisham never devolves into complete hysterics or caricature. Shalom Brune-Franklin plays the cold but intriguing Estella, Miss Havisham’s daughter. One of the most pleasing parts of the show was seeing how Estella’s costume signified her bloom from a green young person to a deep pink rose of a woman. Her costumes always seem either outdated or not in step with the rest of the characters. This allows Estella to have the most unique if slightly unrealistic costume style. A standout is Ashley Thomas, also known as Bashy, as Miss Havisham’s lawyer Jaggers. What is especially impressive about his performance is the commanding screen presence he has with the little time he is in the show. I hope there is more chance for him to become a bigger piece of the show and continue to develop his charming and powerful character. The show does a good job of recounting the events of this classic story while adding new details that highlight the elements that bring this story to new heights.

A New Twist

There has been some debate online as to whether the addition of lightly sexual scenes or the inclusion of drug addiction has ruined the original intent of the story. However, I believe that these changes invigorate the themes ‘Great Expectations’ has to offer. These types of vices allow the characters to break out of rigid social expectations. The lower classes want to express the pain that they suffer at the hands of the upper class. The upper class wants to break away from the rules they must face to be considered a proper part of society. Pip’s transformation from a bright boy to a grown man of the upper class is an impressive transition. He is a man who is destined for things thought far above him.

As of April 5th, the first two episodes are out. The character development has been swift but shows the types of mind games that can be played by the upper class. I for one am interested in the progression of Pip’s story. One element that I always thought was not necessary was the story of the two jailbirds Compeyson and Magwitch. Compeyson is played by Trystan Gravelle and Magwitch is played by Johnny Harris. These two characters have a bitter rivalry that is comparable to the match of Jean Val Jean and Javert in ‘Les Misérables’. Pip’s naive kindness saves the criminals from fighting another day. However, this act of kindness will be instrumental in his life in more ways than one. Another thing that is seen in a new light is the role of women in this show.

Female Representation

None of the female characters are particularly likable in ‘Great Expectations’. That does not mean they are not any less commanding, intelligent, or captivating than if they were morally perfect female characters. However, this does reflect the ways that women may be forced to lash out in a world that is not made for them. They either have to accept the limited choices that are accepted for them to choose, or to make their path. The most well-known woman in this book, Miss Havisham, and her choice to forge her path may leave her lonely. However this version of ‘Great Expectations’ does not reduce any of these women to a lesser position due to their relation to other men. They all seem independent and self-possessing. One character in particular is Secret; who acts as a dominatrix. However, her dress is not as provocative as the word would suggest. Even though these women are severe, their reasoning is sound. This is surprising to me since I have not seen many works of Dickens that feature a strong resolute female character that is not fully tragic. Even though there is anger deep-seated in them, they often direct it to males who have been symbols of oppression. While these women are not the best influences on Pip, they are not one-dimensional villains.

Conclusion

This is one of the more captivating and interesting takes on a piece of literature I have seen in a long time. There is not much, aside from race-blind casting, that they do to make the story updated for a modern audience. This only enhances the story to match the casting opportunities seen today. The show does not feel like a slog through English class. The stakes feel relevant to a modern audience and use the talents of endearing world-class actors. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment of the show, in which we get to see Pip thrust into society. Hopefully, Pip’s adventures are not too soul-crushing, but with Dickens, you never know.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.
