Depth and Meaning in Film
New films and films, in general, provide viewers with a unique experience. Audiences delve into a world created by many different people and take in the story they created. Whether your favorite genre is Comedy, or you prefer Dramas and Thrillers, watching films gives the viewer an opportunity to connect and learn. Movies offer entertainment and the chance to see things you would not usually come across. They also allow viewers the chance to reflect.
Someone who is in the middle of processing a difficult situation can find solace or sympathy in a movie that focuses on a similar event. Watching a film that introduces a different perspective of life lets viewers see a story they might not have come across. Movies also can expose audiences to different beliefs than their own. All of these experiences can allow the viewer to grow.
Films explore different themes and have lessons for their characters. Audiences can identify with the situation or character and reflect on how they would respond in a similar situation. A Harvard Business article about learning discusses how storytelling is a powerful way to influence, teach, and inspire. Movies are an excellent medium for storytelling and can provide audiences with many opportunities to learn. Even if the reason you are watching a movie is to tune out and not think, it still provides the essential service of giving you the chance to relax. The meaning found can be that it is good to laugh or not take things too seriously.

Why Watching New Films is Important
While it is a good thing to relax, the avoidance of watching something new will limit new experiences and an opportunity for growth. This does not mean you cannot watch an old favorite and not get the same feeling that drew you to the movie in the first place. There are plenty of reasons to watch something over and over again. Taking in new films speaks more to making sure you incorporate new experiences into your routine.
Studies have shown that we fear uncertainty more than a known bad outcome. This can make viewers reluctant to step outside their comfort zone and try new things. There is so much content at the touch of our fingers that the number of choices often overwhelms the viewer. Our comfort zones can inhibit exposure to new stories and other ways of thinking. This also can limit opportunities for learning and fun. However, there are many ways you can bring new movies into your life, while still having your old favorites in the mix.
But before we go on to discuss how you can mix new films into your viewing schedule, a big reason to watch new movies that we have not discussed yet is to support filmmakers. Audiences have great power when it comes to the support of filmmaking. Every dollar that we spend on movies is a vote for that film. When movies do not perform well, it can be tough for the people involved to get another chance to make a film. And for emerging talent, audiences turning out for movies can have a considerable impact on their careers going forward.
Independent films, in particular, are affected by this and the wave caused by streaming alternatives. Filmmakers like Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino started their careers with independent films, and if audiences did not turn out for their films, they might have had the careers they do to date. Now, it is tougher for independent films to compete, but moviegoers have the power to support them. A good thing for movie lovers is there are many ways to integrate new films into your life.
Ways to Incorporate New Films
Creating a list of new movies you want to see and telling someone close to you that you mean to watch these films can give you the motivation to follow through. Accountability apps can also help keep you on task. Another way to attain this accountability is to join a movie club. Much like book clubs, movie clubs assign different films to watch, and some have discussions afterward. There are many local and international options, and you can pick a movie club that is the best fit for you. Movie clubs also provide a community that allows you to engage and participate with others.
Checking out what is new is another way to make sure you are getting a fresh experience. If the movie has not come out before, you are going to get that new experience. It can also be a topic starter when discussing movies. Piggybacking on this idea is to set yourself a new movie night. There are plenty of resources that can give you ideas for new films to watch: quizzes, lists, and recommendations are some.
If you set a night to watch a new movie every week, you will give yourself the chance to have new experiences continually. Watching new movies can have a positive impact on your well being and also supports the filmmakers giving you the experience. You do not have to make it a chore, either. Have fun and explore. There are always new films to discover.
