The Kardashian-Jenners often face criticism for their lifestyles, relationships, and perceived lack of relatability. However, who tunes into today’s reality TV for relatability? The real entertainment lies in watching them renovate their mansions, throw lavish parties, embark on spontaneous trips in their private jets, and run their billion-dollar businesses—all while managing their day-to-day lives and being vulnerable with their audience about their family stressors.

Season Premiere Recap

In Episode 1, much of the focus centered on Kourtney Kardashian-Barker and her pregnancy. This shift in focus was refreshing, especially given Kourtney’s frequent assertions that she has grown into a different headspace, preferring to film less and maintain more privacy—an entirely understandable stance. She offered a glimpse into the realities of her pregnancy and shared a brief account of her fetal surgery, describing it as “terrifying,” especially since Travis Barker could not be present. Kourtney also gave viewers a peek into her creative “Rock-n-Roll” gender reveal celebration. With Travis making a brief stop on his Blink-182 tour, the expectant family managed to plan an intimate baby shower in under 48 hours. The most creative aspect of the shower was the will-call counter, where guests checked in and received wristbands, mimicking a concert experience. Guests could choose either a pink or blue wristband to indicate their guess for the baby’s gender. Our final glimpse into Kourtney’s life in the premiere showcased her vintage Disneyland-themed baby shower. Unfortunately, on the day of the event, as Mindy Weiss and her team were completing the setup in Kris’s backyard, Kris received a call from Kourtney revealing that she and Travis had contracted COVID-19. Thinking quickly, they decided not to cancel since guests would be arriving soon. Instead, the expecting couple arrived early with masks to appreciate the beautifully detailed event. Once the guests arrived, Kourtney and Travis, dubbed “Kravis,” maintained a safe distance while guests enjoyed Mickey pretzels, churros, a vintage photo booth, and a custom vintage embroidery station.

The Children Around the World Continue to Ask the question

Another focal point of the episode was Kim Kardashian’s journey with managing her demanding schedule, admitting she has an addiction to staying busy. “Last year, I made a commitment to myself that I was going to slow down, take some time off… I was lying to myself because I’ve never been busier and it’s just who I am…” she stated in her confessional, “I’m in New York for 24 hours and I’ve got Paris coming up.” She talked a lot about how she’s not only running businesses, but attending meetings, still in law school, and most importantly a mom of four.

While Kim Kardashian kept busy, Khloé and Kris spent a lot of quality mother-daughter time together. They went to visit Scott Disick, the father of Kourtney Kardashian’s children to check in on him. The duo seems to have the closest relationship with Disick. Seemingly frustrated, they chatted briefly about the drama that was brewing around Caitlyn Jenner, potentially, being in a docuseries unpacking the Kardashians’ rise to fame. Khloé also visited her children’s father, Tristan Thompson, as he prepared to pack up and move back to Cleveland for the Cavaliers. She expressed her appreciation for the space from Tristan, emphasizing her desire to maintain peace for the sake of their children. In her confessional, she remarked, “They just don’t leave, even when you ask them to… It’s never going to end.” This comment highlights how the men from their past and present seem to remain a constant presence in their lives.

Kylie didn’t have much going on in this episode, but she did have a dinner with Kendall to catch up on life. Hopefully, we’ll soon see some entrepreneurial, mom, and travel footage from her! Meanwhile, Kendall expressed in her confessional that she often talks about her anxiety and horses every season and worries viewers might find her “boring.” However, it’s hard to perceive someone who closes a Paris Fashion Week show at Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld’s former home as anything but iconic. As the season progresses, we hope to see more of Kendall’s day-to-day life, her athletic side, and her humor.

Keeping Up With Production

Since Season 1 of ‘The Kardashians’, it’s been clear how much effort production has put into the quality of each episode, from the cinematography and editing to the soundtrack. Every transition to the next sister’s scene is seamless and expertly executed. Small touches, like adding a title screen for every scene transition with the location or Kardashian-Jenner name, enhance the show’s production quality. One of my favorite things is guessing which Kardashian-Jenner scene is next based on the music and transition footage. A standout technical aspect from the premiere episode was the flawless video editing during Kim’s segment on her busy life. The integration of the camera shutter sound, the strobe effect, and the perfect addition of Britney Spears’ upbeat song, “Work B****,” were masterfully done. I am captivated by the entertainment the female-dominated family brings to each episode, but what truly holds my attention is the mesmerizing video editing by the production crew.

Despite the Kardashian-Jenner family’s lavish lifestyle, the entertainment, family dynamics, love, relationship hardships, personal struggles, and laughter are all enjoyable and sometimes relatable. The series offers a great viewing experience, providing a different perspective on the family compared to what is often portrayed by the media. Catch new episodes of ‘The Kardashians’, produced by Ryan Seacrest, every Thursday on Hulu.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
