The Hollywood Insider Kraven the Hunter, Marvel, Aaron Taylor Johnson

Trauma, relationships, and a ruthless past can change an innocent prey into the dark and bloody catacombs of vengeance to become a hunter.

Known as the world’s greatest hunter. Kraven the Hunter has been hunting for Spider-Man since the human arachnid’s earliest years, with his first appearance being on ‘Amazing Spider-Man #15’ back in 1964. A mere year and a half since his half-brother Chameleon’s introduction as Spider-Man’s first villain. The Kravinoff family has been a pivotal part of the Web-slinger’s journey, with Kraven being a beloved villain amongst fans.

Despite making appearances outside the comic world including the 1995 ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’. Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ acts as the character’s first live-action appearance in film. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as The Unhuntable Sergei, Ariana DeBose as Calypso Ezili, and Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Kravinoff. Sony throws an unexpected and daring attempt to bring the legendary villain into Cinema.

From Prey to Hunter

‘Kraven the Hunter’ has always had a conflicted connection with his past. Set past, no matter his version has allowed Sergei to grow a maniacal and deranged personality, obsessed with honor and ego, leading him to take the mantle of the World’s Greatest Hunter. Despite being born into one the richest and most powerful families in Saint Petersburg, his relationship with his father has never been the best.

‘Can I Go Home Now?’

Sony’s film does touch on his personality and relationships, yet it feels dulled down, making the character feel more human-like instead of the brutal beast that fans are fond of. While his father still has a pivotal place in Kraven’s life and upbringing, this one is conveyed more pressure-based and with much less protagonism rather than the neglectful one that is primordial in the comics.

His motivations and abilities were altered as well. While Kraven hunts for ego in the comics, obsessed with proving to himself and the world that he is the “greatest hunter”, Sony makes the character feel more of an anti-hero rather than a villain. The film undermines Kraven’s abilities, giving Calypso a more protagonist role in building them, when in the comics Kraven’s exceptional hunting abilities are fully fledged well before meeting the voodoo priestess.

The way the film tells Kraven’s story feels rushed, with things “just happening” without a concrete or cohesive context. Despite being a wide array of abilities shown in this world many characters’ powers go widely unexplained relying on concepts of “just existing” or “magic”. For a universe where Spider-Man’s webs are made from actual chemistry-based formulas and Venom’s symbiotic relationships are based on evolutionary biology and parasitic science. Sony’s approach removes the foundational science from the Science-fiction genre that Marvel Comics are famously known for.

The Jungle’s Heart

Columbia Pictures is considered one of the “Big Five” major film studios in American history, celebrating a century of existence this 2024. From ‘Jumanji’ to ‘Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2’, the studio has had its visual ups and downs across the last 100 years. When it comes to ‘Kraven the Hunter’, I believe it stands as both sides of the coin.

On the one hand, The film showcases the gorgeous wilderness of the Reykjanes Peninsula, its jagged land and dramatic landscapes create a deeper connection with Kraven’s animalistic nature while still maintaining to showcase that Russian-esque vibe that is genetically connected with the character. However, on the other side, Sony Pictures opted to create the fauna with a CGI reminiscent of the animals in the 2019’s ‘The Lion King’ live-action remake, giving them a more cartoon-like texture that breaks the immersion and intensity of certain scenes.

The film’s action is definitely its strong suit, having astonishing fight scenes from start to finish. These manage to greatly showcase Kraven’s raw power and remarkable skills as a hunter. His brutal and primal methods allow for a striking yet mesmerizing dance of blood and destruction. Proving once again why Kraven the Hunter is known as The Emperor of the Wild.

One of Thousands

Sony Pictures adds another Iteration to the countless versions of Kraven the Hunter seen across the Marvel Multiverse. Some portray him as a more sympathetic character with profound internal struggles, while others show him as a sadistic animal who has no humanity left within.

The first point is well shown on Earth-31, where Sergei is known as Kraven the Hunter-Spider and he is a part of the Spider-Society. Here, Kraven acts as a Vigilante who after being bitten by a spider the size of a skyscraper while hunting in Zimbabwe obtains spider-like powers. In this reality, Kraven acts as a hunter of hunters. Using his spider powers and hunting abilities to track and kill animal-themed villains.

Of course, most versions of The Grim Hunter share his antagonistic nature. Still, in some worlds, his sense of morality vanishes completely, creating a full on predator. This is amazingly displayed in Earth-9997 also known as Earth X, where most of the heroes are dead or retired and most of humanity has mutated due to exposure to a mutagenic gas released by Black Bolt. Sergei Kravinoff mutated into the thing he hunted the most a lion-like beast, this led him to have suicidal tendencies. Eventually, after countless failed attempts, his humanity vanished completely, becoming nature’s true hunter.

Nevertheless, despite a wide variety of versions and personalities. Every single Kraven still had some characteristics in common. He is always an obsessive hunter, always in relentless pursuit of his quarry. He maintains a personal code of honor, approaching his prey with respect and striving to defeat them without unfair advantages. Finally, Kraven the Hunter almost always becomes an extraordinarily skilled combatant during his formative years.

Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ drastically drifts away from the core aspects that make the character a unique and terrifying personality. When it comes to adapting such a significantly important character, one should stay loyal to the central elements that make the character distinctive from other villains. Stripping that defining personality away, forms a completely different character that fails to capture what makes the original so engaging and appealing to audiences.

Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
