This is Hollywood Insider’s second article on the renew Anne with an E petition. The first one can be found by clicking here. What happens next? The burning question that many of our favorite series left us wondering. We want to follow our favorite characters’ lives as far as we can. It’s upsetting to become so close with a character, and then their series wraps. That’s it. The character and their world goes on but we’re not allowed on that journey. I first experienced these feelings when I watched Miyazaki’s Spirited Away in my youth. Recently, the same feelings have washed over Anne with an E fans after the Candian coming-of-age story reached its conclusion. I may never get to see Chihiro and the spirits live on in the animated masterpiece, but Anne fans may just get their shot.

Renew Anne with an E – The power of social media. Will Netflix and CBC accept?
After the series finale, Anne fans were collectively unsatisfied, longing to see their characters grow through more life transitions. They went to the only place they knew they could be heard: social media. A petition was formed as fans realized they were not singularly dissatisfied. That was eight months ago. Today, that petition has over 1,000,000 signatures, a significant milestone and a proud accomplishment. The dedication to renewing Anne might derive its strength from the show’s spunky protagonist, who inspires even the most lethargic of watchers. Regardless of the reasons it came about, this movement highlights the power of social media organization. Millions could share a small, seemingly insignificant belief, and social media is the only place outside of a fan club to find that out. What started out as a small, maybe goofy idea to start a petition to renew one’s favorite show has now caught the attention of that show’s creator. Will we see a return to Green Gables?
Reasons to renew Anne with an E
We’ve seen fan power bring shows back in the past.
A petition can be powerful in today’s world, with access to millions of potential signees. Petitions are still one of the most straightforward ways to show support for a specific cause. Recently we’ve seen petitions demanding justice for killings of unarmed Black people in America. Unfortunately, a petition only carries support, and little weight beyond that. In the case of Breonna Taylor, we’ve seen ten million signatures achieve small results. The stakes are much lower with Anne and so is the signature count, but that doesn’t discount the show from renewal altogether. One million is a good portion of viewership for a Netflix series. If enough people want the show more, it’s not unheard of for show producers to give something to audiences.
Some shows, like Firefly, which audiences thought ended far too soon, have made movie adaptations to appease viewers. Serenity has never fully quenched that desire for Firefly fans, who still await an adequate continuation. The same has happened with Psych twice now. Dan Harmon’s Community has been brought back several times, and still seeks to fulfill its “six seasons and a movie” slogan. Futurama was renewed by different networks several times. When a show has such a devoted following, like that we’ve seen from Anne, it’s quite likely the cast and crew had a similar devotion during production. If everyone can be on board, the show will find its way back.

Welcome to the waiting game, #AnneNation to renew Anne with an E
While the petition is still gaining support, it has already reached the creator. It seems she is enthusiastic about the support and would love to keep the series going. It all comes down to playing “wait and see” for now, though. The producers, the studios, the cast, and the network all need to be on board for it to be a success. Other shows with eager followers have been duped over the years with teases and rumors. Netflix was going to introduce a new Avatar: The Last Airbender series continuation at one point (a new avatar after Korra), but now it appears to only be a live-action remake. A Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog sequel still has rumors floating around, though Neil Patrick Harris himself said it’s unlikely. I’m sure many creators of cancelled or wrapped shows would love to get on the payroll again, but for the most part, it’s in the hands of the networks.

The affectionate AnneNation has a strong base. It speaks to that fanbase’s power that their words carry through to the right people so soon. As time goes on, the actors will become busy, and the window of opportunity will close. Their price tag will go up as they get more jobs, and it’ll only grow more difficult to bring a series back. This is usually why rumored revivals typically die out. It’s good to see a powerful fandom get the most out of a window of opportunity. The truth is that Anne with an E can return, and fans have taken the first step to show networks and studios the show’s worth. Any network could order a new season of the show, they just have to step into the court and be willing to play ball.
