The Actor: Act I

Sabrina Carpenter made her acting debut at just 12 years old on ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ (1999-). She went on to appear in several supporting roles in shows and films such as ‘Phineas and Ferb’ (2007-2024), ‘Orange Is the New Black’ (2013-2019), ‘Austin & Ally’ (2011-2016) before securing her breakout role on Disney Channel’s ‘Girl Meets World’ (2014–2017), a spin-off of the beloved ’90s series ‘Boy Meets World’ (1993-2000). Carpenter quickly became a fan favorite as the witty, rebellious Maya Hart. While ‘Girl Meets World’ introduced her to a wider audience, her ambitions reached far beyond the screen, as she set her sights on a broader artistic career.

The Singer: Act I

Sabrina Carpenter’s music career began alongside her acting journey. She first showcased her singing talent with the theme song for ‘Girl Meets World’ in 2013. The following year, she signed with Disney Music Group’s Hollywood Records and released her debut single, “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying.”

In 2015, Carpenter dropped her debut album ‘Eyes Wide Open’, featuring standout tracks like “The Middle of Starting Over,” the title track “Eyes Wide Open,” “We’ll Be the Stars,” and her first single “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying.” The album touched on themes of growing up and self-discovery, earning her a Radio Disney Music Award and solidifying her as a rising pop artist.

Her second album, ‘EVOLution’ (2016), marked a significant turning point in her career, with Carpenter writing 9 out of the 10 songs. This album displayed more mature lyrics and a refined pop sound, with bold tracks like “Thumbs,” “Run and Hide,” and “On Purpose.” It was a clear step forward in her musical evolution, perhaps the first step towards ‘Short n’ Sweet.’

Carpenter’s artistic growth continued with ‘Singular: Act I’ (2018) and ‘Singular: Act II’ (2019), where she played a hands-on role in writing every song. Hits like “Almost Love,” “Paris,” and “Sue Me” from ‘Singular: Act I’ highlighted her versatility as a performer, while tracks like “Exhale” and “Looking at Me” from ‘Singular: Act II’ demonstrated her knack for clever hooks and empowering lyrics. These albums marked her shift from a Disney star to a serious, mature musician, as she increasingly took control over her songwriting and production.

The Actor: Act II

While music remained a priority for Sabrina Carpenter, she also made a successful return to acting after her Disney Channel days, choosing roles that allowed her to showcase her range. She appeared in notable films such as ‘The Hate U Give’ (2018), Netflix’s ‘Tall Girl’ (2019) and ‘Tall Girl 2’ (2022), and ‘Work It’ (2020), where she also displayed her dancing skills – one more thing to add to her list of talents. Carpenter further expanded her acting repertoire with roles in Justin Baldoni’s ‘Clouds’ (2020) and Amazon Prime’s thriller ‘Emergency’ (2022).

In 2020, Carpenter made her Broadway debut, starring as Cady Heron in Mean Girls, taking over from Erika Henningsen. This role provided a platform for Carpenter to fully showcase both her acting and singing abilities at once, solidifying her reputation as a versatile performer.

These roles demonstrated her ability to take on more grown-up, multifaceted characters, which is a very clear departure from the less serious roles she had previously been known for.

The Singer: Act II

After her departure from Hollywood Records, Carpenter signed with Island Records. In 2022, Sabrina Carpenter released her fifth studio album, ‘Emails I Can’t Send,’ which marked a significant turning point in her career. The album’s raw, personal lyrics and themes of self-reflection, personal growth, heartbreak, and betrayal set it apart from her previous work. With hits like “Because I Liked a Boy,” “Skin,” “Skinny Dipping,” “Fast Times,” “Vicious,” and the wildly popular “Nonsense,” Carpenter gained widespread recognition. “Nonsense” went especially viral due to her tradition of altering the lyrics with playful puns and innuendos unique to each concert city, a clever move that earned her popularity on TikTok and cemented her reputation as a sharp lyricist. The album earned critical praise, landing spots on both Rolling Stone’s and Billboard’s “Best of 2022” lists.

The authenticity in her storytelling resonated deeply with both longtime fans, and both casual and new listeners. The title track, “Emails I Can’t Send,” opened the album with a level of vulnerability that showcased Carpenter’s growth as an artist and as a person. Unlike many of her Disney-era peers, her career evolved rapidly, solidifying her place as a serious musician and songwriter.

Carpenter’s rising profile led to her securing a coveted spot as an opening act for Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour, where she performed on the international leg across Asia, Australia, and Latin America. This opportunity to share the stage with one of the world’s most iconic performers and the phenomenon that is Taylor Swift further boosted her visibility, both nationally and globally, helping her reach an even broader audience.

The She Espresso

In August of this year, Sabrina Carpenter released her sixth studio album, ‘Short n’ Sweet,’ featuring her latest chart-topping singles “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “Taste.” Remarkably, Carpenter became the first solo artist since The Beatles in 1964 to have her first three top-five hits on Billboard simultaneously. ‘Short n’ Sweet’ debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart, marking a career-defining moment in her rise to pop stardom. With this achievement, Carpenter has firmly established herself as a true pop sensation, and her career is poised to reach even greater heights from here on out.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
