Beloved classic games are being brought to a new form, and audiences are loving it. Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros got fans super hyped, and the film itself was incredibly fun. It’s always exciting seeing the media we know and love to gain new content, and having video games become movies adds another lens to the story. It gives the characters more of a personality and allows for development within and between characters. Instead of Mario going on an adventure to save Princess Peach from Bowser, we get to see Mario (Chris Pratt) struggle with obstacle courses and work alongside Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) to rescue Luigi (Charlie Day) from Bowser (Jack Black).

Transitioning a form of media into a new medium isn’t an easy thing to do. The new medium tries to stick with the source material to keep its originality while also adding its ideas into it. Not all movies that are based on video games end up well, but others do. And when they do turn out well, that just makes the franchises more enjoyable.

What matters the most is that fans like a piece of work from their franchises. ‘The Super Mario’ movie just came out, and audiences are already loving it. It’s not only fun for kids, but it’s nostalgic for older people, too. Mario’s been around for several decades, allowing the fanbase for it to extend over time. The movie itself was very fun, and creative, and made sure to reference lots of Mario titles. Similar to Mario, the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movies have been well-loved. Long-time fans get to see the characters they know and love interact on the big screen, talking to one another with engaging dialogue in charming animation. This isn’t a new wave that’s started though; video game movies have been around for a while. The first Lara Croft film came out in 2001, only a few years after the first game’s release. Even Angry Birds, the popular mobile app, has two movies. There was even a live-action Mario movie from the 90’s. But it seems as time goes on, more video game-based movies come out.

Current Works
A lot of people are currently looking forward to the new ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ movie. There was talk ten years ago about Freddy’s getting a movie, and it’s finally happening. Hopefully, it lives up to the fans’ expectations after having to wait for so long. It should be entertaining watching Freddy’s take a new form and become a horror movie. Although the game is well known and jumpscares are anticipated, fans can’t wait for the release. In this case, it’s not just knowing about what happens. It’s about seeing it visually happen. Fans want to see this franchise brought to cinema in the best way possible. They want the movie to be as horrifying and graphic as possible. One thing to keep in mind is that Five Nights at Freddy’s was not intended for children.

It seems like a lot of young kids are fans of this game, but the movie is not intended for them. It’s supposed to be scary, violent, and graphic. Should the film have a more mature rating, or be softened up for kids? The game shouldn’t have to alter its story to cater to a younger audience. While there will be kids who are upset that their parents don’t want them to watch the film, that shouldn’t stop the movie from being as true to the original story as possible. This is not a game that is meant for children, children just happen to play it. However, the movie should be allowed to follow mature themes to live up to the original game and satisfy more mature audience members. Otherwise, the film will be watered down for safety, making it cheesy and uninteresting for other viewers. Kids do deserve entertainment and to be catered to but with age-appropriate media for them. This game is not age-appropriate for them, and therefore the movie should not be altered specifically in their favor.

Feature Hopes
What games should be turned into movies eventually? There are lots of options and so many considerations. Following the current Nintendo wave, Legend of Zelda would make a great adaptation. The world-building is fantastic, and it would be an interesting challenge to see Link in a cinema setting. In the games, Link doesn’t talk. He’ll make sounds, but not speak. If the franchise were to make a film, would Link talk? Or would he stay mute? There’s so much that happens in Hyrule that Link not talking wouldn’t be a bad thing. It would make the film more unique to center around a character that doesn’t speak. Nintendo games seem to translate into movies well, due to their child-like wonder and charm. There’s so much source material for these franchises to follow, and they’re light-hearted and fun because the games are light-hearted and fun. They become family movie night options and entertain new and old fans.

Opinions
There are so many franchises that would be fun to see be turned into a movie. Kirby, Sims, Among Us, and more. Only time will tell which story will be the next one up on the screen, and audiences are waiting in anticipation. Will it be another classic, or something new? What do you want to see come to life? Hopefully, this trend will continue to grow and be beloved by audiences. It’s slowly becoming its genre, something we haven’t had before. It’s amazing to see new and old franchises get this new breath of life in them, allowing audiences to consume their media in a new way. Let’s hope that Five Nights at Freddy’s meets fan expectations and that this somewhat new subgenre continues to grow.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.
I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
