Russo brothers fans unite! The dynamic duo is gearing up to launch the new spy thriller, The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans and we are pretty excited. If you’re not quite sure who Joe and Anthony Russo are, we’ve got you covered. The Russo brothers, also known as the Marvel brothers, have directed the last two Avengers movies as well as Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Now that they have made the exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Russo brothers have been hard at work to secure big projects. New Netflix film The Gray Man may not have capes and vibranium shields, but it definitely has big potential as the brothers team back up with Evans. Here’s everything to know about the upcoming project.
The Gray Man is set to be based on the 2009 novel of the same name, by author Mark Greaney. The plot follows CIA hire turned independent assassin, Court Gentry, set to be played by Gosling according to IMDb. While the Russo brothers have been working with Captain America himself, Chris Evans for a while, this will be the first time the pair team up to work with Gosling. Evans will play opposite Gosling as his enemy Lloyd Hansen, the man who is after Gentry. The book was a smash hit and quickly turned into the best selling series including ten complete book titles. The tenth installment ‘Relentless’ is set to be published in February of 2021.
Deadline first reported the news, and Director/Producer Anthony Russo said, “The movie is a real mano a mano between those two great actors who represent two different versions of the CIA, in what it can be, and what it can do. For those who were fans of Captain America: Winter Soldier, this is us moving into that territory in more of a real-world setting. That’s what this movie really means for us.” As for Netflix, well this project is costing a pretty penny. The film is budgeted around $200 million and is projected to be Netflix’s biggest project yet. The streaming platform has been producing some pretty amazing feature films as of late (looking at you Marriage Story) So it’s not all that shocking that the company is willing to put forth the extra bucks for a good story. With Evans and Gosling going up against each other, the film is sure to garner a pretty big audience, I mean who doesn’t just adore those two?!
If you didn’t know who the Russo brothers were (where have you been?!) you definitely will know them now. They have their sights set high, and I for one am extremely excited. The plan for The Gray Man is to create a sort of James Bond-esque franchise within Netflix. This goal shouldn’t be too hard to attain as The Russo Brothers’ Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth has recently become Netflix’s most-streamed original feature. Writer Joe Russo announced that a sequel is underway with Sam Hargrave returning as director, so hopefully, Hemsworth will be gracing all of our screens again soon! The big-time action movie is just the latest and greatest from Anthony and Joe. It is also no secret that Avengers: Endgame set amazing records at the box office, so really the Russo brothers are on a roll. Quickly becoming the hottest creatives in town, the Russo brothers are sure to make The Gray Man an instant hit as well.
Chris Evans was most recently in whodunnit Knives Out and Hulu series Defending Jacob. Soon to be co-star Ryan Gosling was most recently in First Man as Neil Armstrong. The Russo’s production company AGBO which was founded in 2016 is backing the film, with Joe Russo writing the script. Joe Russo talked with Deadline about the magnitude of the film, saying “ The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We have all committed to the first movie, and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie.”
In the current state of COVID-19, deciding to go with Netflix might just be the best decision. People are still nervous about public gatherings and streaming at home has become the new norm (totally not mad about it). Netflix has the power to turn this film into the hit series it aims to be. Russo told Deadline, “We have a great working relationship with Netflix, and we go back almost 20 years with Scott Stuber. We formed AGBO to be an agnostic storytelling company, where we figure out the best platform. We think Netflix is the perfect place for this film.” The production for the film is set to begin in the beginning of 2021, fingers crossed!
