  1. The Dark Knight (2008)

It truly doesn’t get much better than Christopher Nolan. Superhero movies have been around since the 1950s but The Dark Knight really set a precedent for a new era of superhero stories. Nolan famously introduced Bruce Wayne and The Joker in a darker, gritty fashion that shocked and excited the world. Heath Ledger gave an unforgettable performance as The Joker, a role that changed the way the world viewed the art of villains. This seedy underbelly of Gotham makes for one of the most realistic superhero stories ever told. It’s the perfect combination of good acting, directing, and plot that few superhero movies have ever come close to touching.

2. Booksmart (2019)

Coming of age movies are a dime a dozen, but few have done as well as Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart. Following best friends Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein), Booksmart tells the story of two goody-two-shoes who have never really cut loose. On the night before their high school graduation, the incredibly talented pair realize they never let themselves be teenagers, while they were busy with their noses in books. The story is hilarious and proves Wilde’s directing skills are lightyears ahead of where anyone could have imagined. If you’re looking for a feel-good movie that is sure to make you laugh, this one is perfect for you.

While on probation after assaulting a police officer, Hunting agrees to therapy with Sean (Robin Williams) in order to study mathematics with a well-known Harvard professor. 4. Parasite (2019) – Award-winning films on Hulu

If you haven’t seen this film yet…where have you been?! This movie just might be the best thing to happen to Hulu in a while. Parasite is the 2020 Academy Award winner for Best Picture, and you really just have to watch to understand why. Filmmaker Bong Joon-ho wrote and directed the film, and it will have you on your toes the entire time. The plot of the movie follows a poor family of four that becomes connected to a wealthy family that is easily tricked. They worm their way into a life entirely different from their own, and it’s a bit of a rollercoaster all the way through. Bong Joon-ho tells this story with an edge and elegance that is impossible to copy. The movie questions themes of greed and integrity and never loses its pace. Definitely, a movie that should be at the top of your list!

5. A Quiet Place (2018)

John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place was one of the best movies of 2018. When people heard Krasinski had written a horror film, nobody was quite sure what to expect. Jim from The Office in a horror film? This we have to see. And boy did he exceed everyone’s expectations. The film centers around a family living in isolation and total silence after a powerful creature has wreaked havoc on the world. The family lives silently, as the creature acts on sound. We follow them while they navigate life in this post-apocalyptic world, making acts of bravery and sacrifice for one another. It takes the horror genre to a whole new level. If you are looking to add some good suspense to your movie night, definitely try A Quiet Place
